June Birth Stone: Alexandrite and Pearl

june_birthstone_bottle_necklace_89576

Did you know that June actually has 2 birth stones?! Read on for some fun facts and history about the two stunning June birth stones – the alexandrite and the pearl.

Green in some forms of light and red in others, the Alexandrite stone is one of the most unique and beloved stones in existence. Named after the Russian Czar Alexander II in reference to the fact that the stone’s changing colors mirrored that of the Russian flag, Alexandrite was first discovered in the 1830s in the Ural Mountains of Russia.

The Pearl, on the other hand, is a more common but equally stunning stone, known in history as the “Queen of Gems.” The pearl has had a long history almost as rich as the gem is beautiful. From adorning the clothing of Queens and Pharaohs to being used as symbols of wealth and power, pearls continue to this day to be a strongly sought-after stone.

May 30, 2016

Flowers are a stunning addition to homes and gardens, but just like there are plants you should stay away from, there are also a select few flowers that humans shouldn’t consume. Daffodils

  • Where they grow: Daffodils grow in temperate and Mediterranean-type climates and naturally thrive on the edge of forests and mountainsides.
  • What’s poisonous: All parts of a daffodil are toxic.
  • Symptoms: When swallowed, poisoning from daffodils may result in mouth irritations, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Your Guide To Poisonous Plants

May 26, 2016

All plants may seem harmless in their natural state, but when you really get to know them, there are some species that just aren’t safe and can cause extreme illness or even death in  humans. And since we’re surrounded by plants each and every day (just step outside and you’ll see!), we want you to know which kinds to stay away from; take a look at the guide we’ve put together on some of the top poisonous plants below.

Hemlock

  • Where they grow: Poison hemlock plants are often found in areas where forest land has been cleared.
  • What’s poisonous: All parts of hemlock plants are poisonous.
  • Symptoms: When eaten, hemlock poisoning may cause abdominal cramps, nausea, convulsions and potentially death. Those who are poisoned but survive may experience tremors or amnesia. Additionally, those with sensitive skin may experience skin inflammation as a result of touching a hemlock plant.

Nightshade

  • Where they grow: Nightshade plants are native to central and southern Eurasia, and are found in fields.
  • What’s poisonous: All parts of nightshade plants are poisonous, with the unripened berry being especially dangerous.
  • Symptoms: If eaten, deadly nightshade plants can cause digestive problems and may be fatal. Furthermore, touching a deadly nightshade plant can result in symptoms such as rashes if the skin has exposed cuts.

It’s Dad’s Turn to be
the Guest of Honor

Celebrate Dad with a Father’s Day Beer Tasting

We received such great feedback on our Wine Tasting for Mom event that I thought, why not plan something similar for Dad? This time we’re going with a beer tasting event in dad’s honor!

Thanks to an increasing appreciation for quality beer production, there are new breweries popping up all over the country. There’s a good chance that there’s one right in your neighborhood or close by. If possible, hosting your Father’s Day event right at the brewery can add a unique feel and make it more fun for everyone. Leaving the beer to the experts gives you more time to focus on the decorations and the fun details that make Dad feel loved and honored for all he does!

I reached out to Gretchen Schmidhausier, a friend of my sister, who recently fulfilled a lifelong dream and opened a microbrewery in her hometown of Neptune City, New Jersey, on the Jersey Shore. The Little Dog Brewing Company was named after Gretchen’s dog Quincy, a basenji, who is also the face of the brand!

All About Gardenias

But unless you’ve had your fair share of experience with gardening, it’s important to take the time to learn about this species before attempting to plant any. To help you out, we’re sharing everything you need to know about these highly popular plants below.

Gardenia Flower Meaning

Gardenias, which were named after Alexander Garden of Charleston, South Carolina, are known to symbolize love, refinement and purity. Additionally, some other meanings associated with this bloom include trust, renewal, clarity and hope. Given their reputation for most commonly being known to represent the first three traits of love, refinement and purity, it is no surprise that gardenias are often included in wedding floral arrangements. During the Victorian times, history explains that gardenias were used to send messages (especially messages of a secret love) between people, and today, they are still the perfect gift to give someone special. Spell It Out

Using the petals from her favorite flowers, spell out “prom?” or “will you go to prom with me?” and lead her to where you’ve done so by creating a flower trail that also uses petals. You can choose to spell out the words on the floor, on the table, or on a large poster that you hang up at school – just make sure you also have a bouquet of her favorite flowers waiting for her at the final destination too!
