From Alabama to Wyoming, each of the fifty states boasts a special bloom to represent their unique region. While some state flowers are chosen simply because they are common in that area, others were chosen due to historical significance or from popular vote from the community.
Fun fact: while each state has its own unique flower, so does each country! The United State’s national flower is the rose. Find out more in our article about different countries and their national flowers!

Grow these Herbs in Your Herb Garden
Did you know that Lemongrass doesn’t even need dirt to grow? Simply buy a stalk with extra stem and place in water. Lemongrass can be used in cooking and for medicinal purposes.
STEM DYED ROSES
Painted flowers of all sorts have become extremely popular over the last year or two. There are basically two different methods for painting flowers—stem dyed and surface painting. One of the most popular by far is the stem dyed multi-colored rose. You may hear them referred to as rainbow, tie dyed, or kaleidoscope roses. This method, used to achieve a multi-colored rose, is one of the more complicated processes, but the results are stunning! While the flower growers that we work with at 1-800-Flowers.com have this process down to a science, it’s also a fun project to try on your own. This was actually the first time I tried it myself, and it was so interesting to see how the petals on each rose accepted the various dyes a little bit differently, creating a bouquet of roses that is as unique as it is beautiful!

DIY Mason Jar American Flag Vase
Seriously, is there anything you can’t do with a few mason jars? I took three small, clear mason jars and painted them in a stars and stripes tribute to Old Glory. One stem of blue hydrangea in each and you have a beautiful, fun, inexpensive centerpiece. You could paint a couple more while you’re at it and use them to hold cutlery or straws, or even tea lights, creating a festive look for evening festivities.
Did you know that June is one of the best times to feed house plants?!
With that said, follow these easy plant care tips to have healthy, flourishing plants all summer long:
- Use a water soluble plant food at half-strength and feed your plant with this mixture every other watering.
- Do not overwater! Even though the weather is getting hotter, water the plants as you have been all winter and spring.
- Keep your plants away from direct sunlight, but do keep them near a bright window to ensure they’re getting proper lighting.
- Keep plants out of the draft of air conditioning to avoid them from getting cold shocked.
- If your home has central air, you may need to be watering more often than the rest of the year since air conditioning has a tendency to de-humidify the air.
- On the other hand, if you don’t have air conditioning and your climate is high in humidity, then you can continue watering as you would during the rest of the year.

Celebrate Dad with a Father’s Day Beer Tasting
We received such great feedback on our Wine Tasting for Mom event that I thought, why not plan something similar for Dad? This time we’re going with a beer tasting event in dad’s honor!
Thanks to an increasing appreciation for quality beer production, there are new breweries popping up all over the country. There’s a good chance that there’s one right in your neighborhood or close by. If possible, hosting your Father’s Day event right at the brewery can add a unique feel and make it more fun for everyone. Leaving the beer to the experts gives you more time to focus on the decorations and the fun details that make Dad feel loved and honored for all he does!
I reached out to Gretchen Schmidhausier, a friend of my sister, who recently fulfilled a lifelong dream and opened a microbrewery in her hometown of Neptune City, New Jersey, on the Jersey Shore. The Little Dog Brewing Company was named after Gretchen’s dog Quincy, a basenji, who is also the face of the brand!
NEW YORK, NY – Held annually at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space museum, this year’s Memorial Day ceremony was led by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and U.S Marine Corps Commander for the Southern Commander John Kelly. Military veterans and families of those who have served as well as members of the general public who wanted to show their support gathered on Monday, May 25, 2015 to honor those who have served and sacrificed.
The ceremony included an unfurling of a 100-foot American flag, rifle salute and a placing of ceremonial wreath. Commander Kelly brought the audience together with a reminder of the scenes and emotions shared by veterans and their families. 1-800-Flowers.com is honored to have had the opportunity to support this event for over a decade with custom floral wreath donations with a nod to the symbolic red, white and blue.
