CARLE PLACE, N.Y. – Longtime Florist and Floral Expert Jerry Rosalia has worked at 1-800-Flowers.com for over 30 years and just celebrated his 60th Valentine’s Day holiday. Of course this impressive achievement called for a celebration (and this blog post) in his honor. Jerry was born with a green thumb as a third generation florist growing up in Brooklyn, New York.
At 83 years young, Jerry loves his job and has been a mentor, inspiration, and friend to all around him. With a smile on his face, Jerry continues to lend his floral expertise to florists around the country at BloomNet®, 1800Flowers’ international floral wire service. You may also recognize Jerry as a contributing writer to this very blog as he lends his floral and plant knowledge to the public.
At 1-800-Flowers.com it has become a tradition to celebrate the Hindu “festival of lights” Diwali, also known as “Deepavali.” Using the lunar calendar, Diwali falls in autumn every year during the Hindu calendar month of Kartika.
To celebrate in the office, we dine on traditional cuisine and members of the 1-800-Flowers.com family dress in traditional and festive attire and decorate around the office with lit candles “diyas” and colorful floor art “rangoli” (our team used flower petals). Check out some of our pictures from today’s Diwali celebration!
NEW YORK, NY – On October 22, 2014 Pencils of Promise (PoP) celebrated their 4th annual Gala at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. “Everyone has a promise” is the organization’s mission as they help raise funds for education programs and operations in locations where it is needed the most such as Ghana (Africa), Guatemala (Central America), and Laos (Southeast Asia). PoP also encourages young leaders around the world to take positive action both locally and globally.
1-800-FLOWERS.COM has been thrilled to work with the organization for the past five years including the support of all four Galas, and was honored to be able to donate the education inspired floral centerpieces for the event.
“We are delighted to support Pencils of Promise, as we recognize the importance of education and training to help individuals grow both professionally and personally.”
– Chris McCann, President, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM
“We are proud to support this incredible organization. This year, we launched our prom program where a portion of all corsages sold online and in our flower stores, was donated to Pencils of Promise. With the proceeds raised, we were able to build a classroom,” says 1-800-FLOWERS.COM Vice President of Retail Marketing, Lisa Hendrikson.
This year’s PoP Gala was hosted by Sophia Bush and the honorees included sixteen year old Pakistani school pupil and education activist Malala Yousafzai, New Jersey Senator Elect Cory Booker, and The Cahill Family. Malala’s award was accepted by Shiza Shahid, Executive Director of the Malala Fund who recited Malala’s powerful words on her behalf, “…that education is our basic right.”
