The meaning and history of the flowers
Roses
The rose has always been associated with love and beauty. It is said that when Aphrodite, the goddess of love, rose from the sea, the foam which covered her nakedness turned into white rose bushes as it fell to the ground.
According to mythology, Aphrodite also created the red rose. It happened when Adonis, the handsome young man whom she loved, was gored by a wild boar. As she ran to help him, she scratched herself on the thorns of a rosebush. It was her blood that turned the white roses red.
Today, the different colored roses have different meanings. Pink roses are symbolic of friendship; red and white roses represent unity; white roses stand for purity; yellow roses stand for friendship; and red, of course, stands for passionate love.
Snapdragons
Although their origins are unclear, many believe that snapdragons first grew as wildflowers in Spain and Italy. There are varieties in most colors, except shades of blue.
Many of these gorgeous flowers grow on one stalk and look like the open jaws of an animal?hence the name. A light pressure on either side of a single blossom will make the jaws of the snapdragon open, resembling a yawning mouth.
The snapdragon is considered a dramatic flower and in the Victorian language of flowers, are said to symbolize ?presumption,? since it is a plant that will take over the garden unless it is carefully cultivated.
Concealing a snapdragon made a person seem gracious and fascinating. Snapdragons were believed to protect people from deceit and curses. The snapdragon was also an excellent source for clothing dyes, and it was also cultivated for seed oil that was used like Olive Oil.
Gerbera Daisies
Discovered in 1884 near Barberton, South Africa, by Robert Jameson, the popularity of the Gerbera daisy soon became a worldwide phenomenon.
