Meet our SEO & Interactive Marketing Intern Jessica Flareau

This summer, I am lucky to experience a potential career path as a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Marketing Intern at 1-800-Flowers.com! As a Business Management major with a concentration in Marketing, I couldn’t wait to put some of the things I’ve learned to use. This is my first meaningful corporate experience and within the first week of this internship, I learned more than I could have possibly imagined about search engine optimization, various programs, and how the company leverages blogging. Though I’m already one month into the program, I still learn something new every day.

The best part about this internship is that my work is actually being used by my manager, other coworkers and often put directly onto the website or blog. I attend meetings, contribute work, and feel like I am a part of the team. Additionally, I am working with a group of four other interns on an internship project in which we are creating a business plan for a potential start-up brand. With this project, I feel like I’m taking the skills I learned in school and putting them to use.

Everyone that I have worked with has been great – from my fellow interns all the way to my supervisors. They are remarkably interested in teaching and training their interns and I never have to feel frightened about asking for help. I am very excited for the weeks to come, the events I will attend and the things I will continue to learn.

Interactive Marketing

Working at 1-800-Flowers.com this summer has truly been a rewarding experience. Initially, I was quite nervous about living in Long Island for the summer because most of my family and friends live in Michigan. However, since the moment I arrived, everyone has been so welcoming that it made 1-800-Flowers.com feel like a second home. There is something special about this office – there is always a positive vibe that flows through the office.

I am currently a junior at Dartmouth College majoring in Economics. When I first arrived, I was anxious as my liberal arts education has provided me with little experience in analytics and online marketing. However, I have quickly noticed that everyone in the office wants to help and is essentially only a question away. On my first day, one of my managers told me, “Always feel free to ask questions. We are here to help you with your professional development.” I took this to heart and asked a great deal of questions to become a better suited intern and make greater contributions to this company.

Working under Amit Shah, Vice President of Mobile and Social Media, and John Ryan, Digital Leadership Associate, has been extremely rewarding. Both are so knowledgeable in their fields and I am constantly learning from them. One of my favorite aspects of this internship has been the comradely of the Fruit Bouquets team. It resembles a start-up company as the brand continues to grow and develop.

After this internship, I will return to Dartmouth for my senior year. By this time, I hope my analytical and online marketing skills develop greatly. I’m excited for what the future of this internship entails. I am only two weeks in and I am ready for the eight more!

Social & Mobile Marketing

I have always had a love and appreciation for all things flowers – receiving them being among my favorite. I was beyond excited and appreciative when I was given the opportunity to participate in the 1-800-Flowers.com internship program where I could expand on my love of flowers, marketing, social media, and above all – helping people.
While this is not technically my first internship, I would definitely say it is my first meaningful corporate experience. Here, I am grateful to be working for the Mobile/Social Marketing and International Team under the Associate of the Digital Leadership Program. It is a privilege to be working in an environment that is so new and rapidly evolving.
Prior to the program kickoff, I was nervous about the idea of coming to a prestigious company with such little professional experience. My concerns were put to rest as my manager and team provided guidance in teaching me essential digital and analytical marketing skills. I have been updating floral collections featured on the website and promoting products through social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. There is never a dull moment, especially because I am involved in projects that directly relate to revenue-generating activities.
Thus far, I have learned the importance of good communication and listening skills. I have never realized how crucial it is to be an astute listener to my colleagues in order to absorb and understand all the information I can. Exposure to marketing terms and concepts has helped me gain invaluable knowledge. While listening is certainly important, concise communication is essential in delivering messages with clarity and confidence. As my manager would say, communication should be expressed in few syllables, yet in a manner that is sharp like a knife.
With merely three weeks under my belt, I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to experience all that this program has to offer. 1-800-Flowers.com is acclaimed for delivering smiles to its customers. However, I’ve observed how this attitude and culture applies to its employees as well. My team has supported my development each day with patience and genuine care. I am truly grateful for this experience and look forward to what lies ahead.
