Merchandising intern Kara Lange describes how interning at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM has enabled her to see the business world in a way that she would otherwise not have been able to. Here is her internship experience in her own words:

Merchandising Intern Kara Lange“When I originally found out I was going to be in the Merchandising Department here at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, I was a little apprehensive. As a science major, I really didn’t have much of an insight into anything in the business world. I had taken Economics in my first year of college, but didn’t really have any further business background.

As a Florist Designed intern, I have been given the opportunity to see how products are created, how they are completed and ready for sales, and every step along the way. My experiences range from working in the design studio and preparing the flowers to be used in arrangements, to observing photo shoots, and even attending meetings about marketing initiatives, and how products should be placed on the website to increase sales.
An internship at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM has been such an amazing opportunity. You are able to really see the business world from a leading company, and are trusted with many projects and opportunities. I have gained so much from this experience, at the company interns aren’t stuck at a desk all day every day, they are given the chance to participate in anything that could possibly be a learning experience, and get a true idea of all of the hard work it takes to make 1-800-FLOWERS.COM a success.”

The INTERNal Perspective of Public Relations Intern Karina Wrona

Public Relations intern Karina Wrona shares her experiences as an intern at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM. Hear how she helped deliver smiles at the Boys and Girls Club:

Public Relations Intern Karina Wrona“My name is Karina Wrona and I will be a sophomore this fall at Marist College where I am majoring in Public Relations and minoring in Fashion Merchandising. This summer I am working with the Public Relations team where I have discovered how the world’s leading florist and gift shop delivers smiles to its millions of customers. These first few weeks at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM have already brought about so many opportunities and hands on experiences.  I was welcomed with open arms and immediately educated about the company. After learning what a caring department I would be working with I was stress-free and eager to begin.  With assignments ranging from press releases to community outreach my assignments allow me to explore and be creative.  With help from my team I took on the assignment of coordinating a Summer of a Million Smiles event. We paired up with a local Boys and Girls Club to help bring smiles to their community. As students celebrated the end of a successful school year the team hand-delivered smiles by passing out cookies from Cheryl’s new Carnival line. Afterwards, children worked on creating their own version of smiley faces using paper plates and art supplies which was a great way to tie our initiatives to their creativity. The End of the Year Carnival & BBQ was filled with games, food, outdoor fun and most importantly smiles!

This internship has been extremely rewarding as I first hand have witnessed the results of everyone’s work. I am looking forward to the coming weeks as I am certain I will continue to learn about the industry.”

The INTERNal Perspective of HR Intern Jaclyn Sanderson

Jaclyn Sanderson, a first-time Human Resources Intern, shares her experience being a part of 1-800-FLOWERS.COM. Hear her story in her own words:

Human Resources Intern Jaclyn Sanderson“Working here at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM this summer is my first Human Resources internship. I am going into my junior year at Marist College in the fall, where I am majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis in HR. For the past weeks, I have been involved in multiple projects that involve different aspects of the department. I am currently in the process of setting up a walking challenge throughout the company and its sister-brands in order to promote our wellness program and healthy living.

I have been extremely satisfied with my internship and beyond grateful for the opportunity. It has been an immensely large learning opportunity, intellectually and personally. Not only have I been able to obtain a well-rounded experience of the HR world, but I’ve also been able to be a part of an extremely pleasant work environment. I’ve realized that 1-800-FLOWERS.COM truly caters to its employees and helps them out in any way possible that will better their experiences with the company. The culture and sense of community is very apparent, which I believe is the company’s strongest asset.”

2013 INTERNal Perspective: PR Intern Sarah Melley | Petal Talk

In Sarah’s third blog post for the INTERNal Perspective, she describes how much she has learned at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM as well as her wonderful experiences with Summer of a Million Smiles:

Public Relations Intern Sarah Melley“My name is Sarah Melley and I am a Public Relations intern here at I am going into my sophomore year at the University of Rhode Island with a major in Public Relations and a minor in Leadership Studies. This is my second summer as an intern here and I love it. The PR team has taught me so much in the past year and they continue to teach me every day. I have improved my writing skills by drafting at least one pitch a week and I am constantly learning about different media outlets and how to form the best media relationships.
So far this summer I have had the opportunity to participate in the Summer of a Million Smiles campaign through two events. I attended a Mets game with the PR department and several other interns where we handed out Cheryl’s cookies and The Popcorn Factory popcorn balls to fans as they were leaving the stadium, which delivered some sweet smiles! Later this month I will also be attending the Surfer’s Way event down in Long Beach. At this event, children with special needs will be able to surf the waves, regardless of the challenges they might be experiencing. I will be delivering smiles by helping out with equipment and snacks throughout the day.
So far this internship has been great! I have learned so much about Public Relations between my first year at school and the past two summers working here at This internship was an awesome opportunity to show me the ropes of PR and I look forward to learning more.”

Email Marketing Intern Erin Mullane“My name is Erin Mullane and I am going to be a junior at Providence College this fall.  The experience from my first summer internship at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM in 2012 taught me so much about the marketing field, I decided to return for a second summer! This summer I am interning with the email marketing department, which is different from the retail marketing department that I worked with last  year.. While working with the email team I have had the opportunity to sit in on meetings with many departments including merchandising and creative. These collaborative meetings ensure the emails are flawless and ready to be sent out to 1-800-FLOWERS.COM subscribers.

It was astounding to see how much work and time goes into perfecting the emails weeks before they are going to be sent out. The email team prepares new email campaigns in advance by analyzing how various email campaigns performed in previous years and the current competitive landscape. This experience at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM has given me an immense amount of real world knowledge that will be extremely useful when I graduate college in two years!”

Vendor relations intern Kevin Sanches shares with us his internal perspective. Listen to his experience delivering smiles at a Mets game in his own words:

Vendor Relations Intern Kevin Sanches“My internship experience at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM has been nothing but exciting, engaging, and most importantly, enjoyable. As a 20-year-old Management major at St. John’s University, I have learned a lot of vital information on how to manage, yet I didn’t know much about supply chain management. My internship has expanded my knowledge even further through experiences that I will take with me for the rest of my career. By attending weekly team meetings as well as consulting and being given insight to the functions of many of the other related departments; I have gradually attained an understanding of the logistics of all of 1-800-FLOWERS.COM’s floral, plant, gift, and baskets vendors from supplier to consumer. Additionally, I have been fortunate enough to learn and operate several of the processes that Vendor Relations performs in order to keep up the company’s success rate.

Altogether, this internship program has been so valuable in developing my knowledge of logistics and effectively expanding my career options.  One of my favorite experiences this summer was the opportunity to represent the company and deliver smiles by distributing thousands of Cheryl’s cookies and The Popcorn Factory popcorn balls to Mets fans during a game at Citi Field. The event was a part of the company’s Summer of a Million Smiles initiative, in which we were able to deliver smiles through the sister brands’ sweet treats. This internship has been more than beneficial, by setting up special events to cater to the interns and allow us to learn essential tools that will help us beyond our education. I am so grateful to have been a part of this wonderful company and will always remember my internship at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM as an amazing one.”

2013 Summer Interns INTERNal PerspectiveThe INTERNal Perspective is back again for the second year in a row! Focused on our Summer Internship program, INTERNal Perspective provides an inside scoop on this year’s interns. Here our interns will share who they are, what they have accomplished during their time at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, and how they have contributed to helping us deliver smiles!

This year, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM summer internship program has continued to flourish with a total of 31 interns. Each intern brings their own personality, enthusiasm and talents to 1-800-FLOWERS.COM and their respective departments. After completing their first few weeks at the company, the interns have come to know each other well as they work together on group projects, now we’d like to give the interns an opportunity to share who they are and their INTERNal perspectives!
