Every year, thousands gather to watch the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in mid-town Manhattan, NY. Unofficially, this tradition started in 1931 with a 20 foot tree decorated by construction workers with paper, tin cans, and strings of cranberries. Although there was no tree in 1932, there has been a tree every year since the official tradition began in 1933. We have our own tradition here at 1800Flowers with our Holiday Flower Tree. Here’s our history:
Back in the late 1970’s in the original 1800Flowers shop on 1st Avenue in New York City, we were one of the first in the neighborhood to sell live Christmas trees. Customers would often tell us that they’d love to have a live tree, but their apartments were too small. One night, as we were cleaning up after a busy day of designing arrangements, a customer came in and asked if we had anything that would fit on a desktop. My sister Julie and I began crafting some boxwood into a Christmas tree, and decorated it with flowers and ornaments. the customer stood in amazement and exclaimed, “That’s perfect!” In that moment the Holiday Flower Tree was born. It has since become one of our most popular and treasured designs of the holiday season. I hope it brings just as much joy to you and your family this year.
