The Benefits of Flowers & Plants

Everybody knows that the plants bring beauty of nature idoors with their lush greenery and vibrant blooms. But did you also know that plants possess the ability to improve your quality of life? According to research done by NASA and Dr. Bill Wolverton, many common houseplants and blooming potted plants:

  • Are extremely efficient at scrubbing harmful gases (VOCs - volatile organic compounds) such as trichloroethylene, benzene, formaldehyde and carbon monoxide from the air through the process of photosynthesis (1).

  • Are nature's "life support systems" because of their ability to remove toxic contaminants from their surrounding environments (2).

  • Help people recover from illness faster and play a psychological role in a person's sense of well-being (2).

When a friend or loved one passes away, many people want to send funeral flowers as a symbol of their love and a show of heartfelt condolences to the family and other mourners at the service. The options for funeral flowers include: arrangements for the casket, standing arrangements such as floral crosses or wreaths, as well as smaller baskets or arrangements. However, etiquette dictates what type of arrangement is appropriate as not all funeral flowers should be sent by anyone.

Funeral Flower Etiquette at the Service

For the most part, flowers for the top or inside of the casket itself and large standing floral wreaths or sprays are generally sent only by the immediate family. The type of funeral flowers appropriate for friends or co-workers of the deceased are usually smaller standing sprays or flower baskets that can be displayed at the funeral service or at the home of the family.

Send Flowers to the Home of the Family

If you are not able to attend the funeral service, you can still send sympathy flowers to the family's home as all funeral flowers do not need to be at the service. The most common options for a sympathy gift to the home are a vase of beautiful flowers or a floral basket. Fruit baskets or gifts of gourmet food are also appreciated at the home of the family when they receive mourners.

Rely on the Experts

No matter what type of funeral flowers you need, the expert Sympathy Advisors at 1-800-FLOWERS.COM® will be able to help you with selection and ordering, and they will arrange for delivery to the funeral service location or family home. All funeral flowers on 1-800-FLOWERS.COM are thoughtfully designed by their creative florists, and the designs include traditional flowers for the funeral service as well as more contemporary styles to have sent to the home of the family.
