Tell us your favorite work story.
Since, I’ve been with 1-800-Flowers for a long time, it’s tough to come up with just one favorite story. However, the one that means the most to me has to do with 9/11. As everyone remembers all too well, Americans, and New Yorkers in particular, were devastated by the unthinkable horror of those first days. Everyone felt helpless and grasped at anything they could to try to do something to show their support for all of the families who were directly impacted by the events of 9/11.
As you may know, 1-800-Flowers.com stepped up big time during the days and weeks after the tragedy, but they also gave their employees (and employee family members) an opportunity to do something. We were able to volunteer at our Bethpage facility to help prepare the thousands and thousands of flowers that were used for the countless floral arrangements—roses to be given to family members at the numerous services held around the city, and for the floral American Flag that covered the Pitcher’s Mound the day of the services at Yankee Stadium. We were able to help load all of the floral pieces onto the trucks that would take them and our love, tears and prayers to their various destinations in the city. We were given a gift those terrible days, and all felt that in some small way, we had done something to help. I’ve never been prouder of my husband, my son, myself, but especially 1-800-Flowers.com and our team members as we worked together to show how much we cared.
What is the most valuable thing you have learned about flowers and plants during your time here?
That I’m allergic to lilies and baby’s breath…just kidding! Flowers really do bring smiles to your face.
What is your favorite flower or plant and why?
Tulips, because they represent Spring.
