DIY Floral Cinco de Mayo Centerpiece

May 1, 2015

In honor of Cinco De Mayo, put a festive touch on your space with a simple Cinco De Mayo centerpiece! Whether you’re celebrating with a full-fledged fiesta or simply want to show your support, put yourself in the Cinco de Mayo by adding a festive centerpiece to your space!

For the flowers, opt for an arrangement that is vibrant and reminiscent of traditional Mexican colors if possible. We used flowers from the It’s Your Day Bouquet from 1-1-800-Flowers.com which really made this Cinco De Mayo decoration pop. I then came across mini fruit lollipops at my local party supply store and slipped them in for an extra festive touch!

1-800-Flowers.com Celebrates Take Your Mom to Work Day 2015

April 27, 2015

CARLE PLACE, NY – On Monday, April 6th 2015, 1-800-Flowers.com celebrated Take Your Mom to Work Day by inviting a group of 17 Moms of some of our amazing staff members. Their day began with a greeting from CEO and founder, Jim McCann. Moms then joined their children on our “red carpet” for a photo opportunity which our sister brand, Personalization Universe, later turned into a keepsake they can hold on to for years to come.

After they were done striking their best pose, the Moms then participated in a floral arrangement workshop instructed by Floral Designer, Phil Devito. The Moms then helped spread the smiles by donated their handmade floral arrangements to the ER staff ant Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, NY.

After a long morning of learning the flower arranging craft, Moms were treated to a brunch where they were serenaded by some of our staff members with an acoustic guitar and vocal set. The Moms then continued their day by learning a bit more about the company their children work for with a behind-the-scenes look at our product development and growing fruit bouquets business.

The day ended on a sweet note with Moms departing with a Thank You Bag filled with a variety of treats from our Sister brands. Each gift bag included:

Cookies from Cheryl’s
Chocolates from Fannie May
Truffles from Harry & David
Caramel Popcorn from The Popcorn Factory
Stationery from Fine Stationery

In addition to the gift bags, both Moms and their children took home a day of memories they won’t soon forget. One Mom, Sharon Trench, remarked, “Over the years Kelly and I have shared many wonderful times, which has led to many heartfelt memories. I can honestly say..my day at work with her has quickly become one of my fondest memories. Thanks to the wonderful staff at 1800flowers. Truly amazing!”

A Passion For Roses from the Flower Farm

April 27, 2015

The flower business is a very passionate one. From the breeders to the growers to the florists and floral designers, we all love what we do. One of my favorite parts of my job is getting to visit the farms that grow the beautiful flowers that bring smiles to so many faces every day.

I didn’t know what to expect on my trip to the farms in South America where 78 percent of the 4 billion cut flower stems purchased in the U.S. are grown. Our first stop was at Passion Growers in Bogota, Colombia, where the beauty of the land and the warmth of the people blew me away.

The owners of Passion—Jaime and Cheryl Peisach and Sam Ferrara—intended to create a small company, a hobby, to do what they loved and do it as best as they possibly could. The idea was simple: provide the best roses available anywhere and NEVER waiver on the highest standards—including the highest ethical standards—consequently resulting in a positive impact on customers, associates, suppliers and the community. This is how Passion Growers was born. Continue Reading…

Cinco de Mayo Decorations & Party Ideas

April 21, 2015

Our country is rich in many different cultural traditions, with celebrations focusing on specific groups growing and becoming more popular every year. And who doesn’t need another reason to party!

Cinco de Mayo is one of my new favorites! The food and the colors of Mexico are made for celebrating – bright, spicy, and flavorful! Here are a few ideas to try for your Cinco de Mayo celebration.

Fiestaware pieces are the perfect container for a few cut flowers. While dahlias are pictured here and are the official flower of Mexico, they aren’t available until late summer. Any colorful bloom will work perfectly.

Mexicali Rose

Create a unique floral arrangement using a doll and floral foam. This Mexicali Rose features pom-poms, mini carnations, statice and button poms. Her top was made from lace ribbon, and her headdress and necklace were made by stringing hypericum berries on strands of skinny ribbon.

An easy way to make a doll floral arrangement is to use a cake decoration doll pick and cone-shaped floral foam. Soak the foam first, place on small dish that is slightly larger then the foam base, cut off the top third of the foam, and insert doll pick into the top of the foam.

You can make a simple top for the doll using a piece of ribbon. For the flower skirt, cut the flower stem short, about 1”, and insert into the foam starting at the bottom and going all the way around. Keep adding a layer at a time using slightly small flowers as you get to the top of the skirt, inserting the stems at more of an upwards angle will also help to bring in the width as you go.

Colors of Mexico

A friend brought these beautiful hand blown glasses back from their Mexican vacation as a thank you gift for me. I think they make great vases massed out with a single sunflower in each.

Food and Drinks

What’s a Mexican-themed parry without guacamole and chips? Guacamole is one of the easiest dips to make. You can keep it super simple and just add some Kosher salt to mashed avocados. For a quick upgrade add in some prepared salsa. Even taking it all the way up is still easy. Here’s a recipe that’s almost fool proof:

  • 2 ripe avocados
  • ½ teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp. fresh lime juice
  • 2 tbsp. minced red onion
  • 2 tbsp. fresh chopped cilantro
  • A dash of pepper
  • ½ ripe tomato chopped – seeds and pulp removed
  1. Cut the avocado in half. Remove seed, scoop out the avocado and put in mixing bowl.
  2. Mash up the avocado with a fork leaving it a little chunky.
  3. Sprinkle with lime juice and salt.
  4. Add the chopped onion, cilantro, and black pepper and mix well.
  5. If you are not going to being serving immediately, cover tightly and refrigerate until ready.
  6. Chop the tomatoes and add right before serving.

Sangria is very similar to the guacamole in that it is a no brainer for Mexican celebrations. It is easy to make, or you can buy it pre-made. Here is a basic red wine sangria recipe:

  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • ½ cup brandy
  • ¼ cup orange liquor
  • 2-3 cups sparkling water
  • Fresh fruit – apples, oranges, grapes, etc.
  1. Cut up the fruit into slices or wedges.
  2. Put all ingredients in a container, cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours (overnight is even better).
  3. Serve in a large pitcher with ice and top off with the sparkling water.

These oversized floral cocktails from 1-800-Flowers.com are the perfect way to celebrate or send a smile on Cinco de Mayo. Choose from the Sangria or the Margarita!
