How To Make Valentine’s Day Special For Kids

Although Valentine’s Day is usually associated with the romantic kind of love, husbands, wives, boyfriends and girlfriends aren’t the only ones who deserve some special attention - children do too! Just think back to when you were in elementary school and had the chance to pass out your Valentine’s Day cards and candies to your friends - it’s something we remember most about our holiday experiences in school, what about you? Nothing is more exciting for children than the opportunity to do something that someone they care about will hold close to their heart, which is why it’s up to you to make their Valentine’s Day one to remember! But in case you’re having trouble with where to start, we have a few ideas for you:

DIY Decor

Grab some paper, markers, crayons, and glue (and don’t forget about the glitter!) and set your children up to make their very own Valentine’s Day decorations that you can hang or use around the house. How about a heart shaped placemat for each member of the family to dine on during a Valentine’s Day weekend dinner? Or, maybe a “Happy Valentine’s Day” poster that you can hang on the front door.

Breakfast in Bed

Should mom, dad or both be treated to breakfast in bed, let the kids help! Even if they aren’t the ones doing the cooking (although they can certainly prepare the ingredients with you), they can still lend a helping hand by delivering breakfast to the bedroom or putting the plate together. If you want to add some more fun to the morning, they can even play the role of waiter or waitress and take mom/dad’s order before anyone starts in the kitchen!

Sweet Treats

Valentine’s Day wouldn’t be complete without a treat or two. So, just like you can invite the kids to help with breakfast, ask them to help with dessert - digging into a batch of cookies made with love is the perfect way to end a Valentine’s Day celebration. But even if you aren’t too into the idea of cooking, you can always ask your children for their input on which gift basket they’d like to present mom or dad with instead. A Valentine’s Day gift basket certainly has enough goodies for the whole family!

Crafty Keepsakes

While mom may be the focus on Valentine’s Day, dads deserve some attention (and a gift) too! So, for the moms out there, gather your children together and have them make something for dad by hand - since he probably won’t be looking for roses, something personalized may be the best approach! For example, have your children make a picture frame and stick a picture of them with dad in it before wrapping it up.

Last, but certainly not least, one of the best ways to make Valentine’s Day special for children (aside from including them in your plans) is to let them know how much they mean to you - saying “I love you” may be all it takes to put a smile on their face. And even though you and your sweetie are entitled to some alone time, it doesn’t hurt to plan a family activity to finish things off - a movie night, perhaps.
