We Partnered with Rent the Runway to Deliver Mother's Day Flowers and It Proves What We've Always Known: It's the Gratitude That Matters Most

At 1-800-Flowers.com, we've been helping people celebrate Mother's Day for 50 years. We already know how much these gifts mean. Every spring, the messages that arrive alongside orders remind us that a bouquet is never really about the flowers. It's about what someone is trying to say.

This year, our collaboration with Rent the Runway gave us a chance to see that gratitude at a scale we hadn't quite experienced before. In partnership with Rent the Runway, we invited members to nominate a woman who deserves to be celebrated, and the heartfelt notes that came back were extraordinary. Hundreds of messages, each one a small portrait of a mother, a best friend, a mentor, or a chosen family member and everything she's done to make someone's life better. What the nominators didn't know was that both they and the women they nominated would receive a bouquet from our designer-curated collection, a surprise-and-delight moment that turned recognition into something shared.

Reading those messages together in one place was genuinely moving. They reaffirmed what we've always believed: Mother's Day is about gratitude, recognition, and celebrating women for everything they do. And they reminded us why we're honored to help people express that every year.

What Makes a Meaningful Mother's Day Message

The nominations were a masterclass in heartfelt gratitude.

One person wrote: "I am nominating my best friend because when I feared a breast cancer diagnosis, she never left my side. She even showed up at 4 AM to drive me to an appointment."

Another: "My mom is my backbone and biggest inspiration. She's incredibly selfless, always putting her kids, grandkids, and community first, even volunteering at her local food bank."

These aren't generic "thank you" messages. They name exactly what someone did and why it mattered. That's what makes a meaningful Mother's Day gift: the words that come with it. Research on what mothers actually want consistently shows that feeling genuinely seen ranks above any material gift.

If you're writing a card this year, let the nominations inspire you. Skip "Happy Mother's Day, love you!" and try naming the moment. When did she show up? What did she carry? What would have fallen apart without her? Some of the most powerful messages came from people whose mothers are navigating hard seasons. One read: "My mom has had a really rough year. She lost her husband (my dad) of 50 years last January… She is doing her best, but is missing the person who always had her back." Another described a different kind of quiet strength: "At 72, my mom is our family champion. While caring for my sick dad, she runs two businesses, keeps our home, and dotes on her grandson."

These notes didn't shy away from the hard stuff. They leaned into it. They said, "I see what you're carrying, and I want you to know it matters." That kind of honesty, especially during grief or exhaustion, can mean more than any gift on its own.

Mother's Day Gratitude Goes Beyond Mom

One of the most striking things about the nominations was how broadly people defined "mother."

Bonus moms who showed up when they didn't have to. Aunts who stepped in during difficult circumstances. Best friends who became family. One nominator wrote about her daughter: "While she is not a mother yet, I am so grateful to be hers. She is strong, kind, and helps others every day." Another captured the expansiveness of the word even more directly: "Although she isn't my Mom, she's the closest thing I have to a Mom after my Mom passed away."

Another wrote: "[My mom] has raised three daughters, all of whom use Rent the Runway. She always compliments us on our beautiful dresses and makes us feel special. I'm a public school educator and can't always afford to send my mom flowers for Mother's Day."

Mothering is something people do, not just something people are. If someone has cared for you, believed in you, and shown up for you, she belongs in your Mother's Day.  And she deserves flowers for everything she does.

The Flowers Are Beautiful. The Words Are What She'll Remember.

We've spent the past five decades delivering flowers, and we know the impact they can have. But the Rent the Runway nominations reminded us of something we hope you'll take with you this Mother's Day: the arrangement gets the smile, but the message is what she'll come back to.

So, this year, before you click "send," take a minute to write her something real. Tell her about the time she drove across town at a moment's notice. The way she held your family together through a year nobody saw coming. The fact that she still makes you feel special every time she sees you, no matter how old you get.

That's what a meaningful Mother's Day gift looks like. Not the right product, but the right words, delivered alongside something beautiful.

Q & A

What should I send for Mother's Day if I want it to feel meaningful?

A meaningful Mother's Day gift pairs something beautiful with something personal. Choose an arrangement or gift that reflects her taste, then write a note that names a specific reason she matters to you. That combination of thoughtfulness and specificity is what she'll remember. Is Mother's Day only for moms?

Mother's Day is a chance to celebrate all the women in your life who have shown up to support you: stepmothers, grandmothers, aunts, close friends, even mentors. If someone has supported, and believed in you, she deserves recognition.

What can I do for Mother's Day besides buy a gift?

Being present is often more important than any gift. Cook Mom a meal, handle her errands for the day, or simply spend unhurried time together. Write a letter naming specific moments when she made a difference. For more ideas, see our list of 10 Ways to Honor Your Mother This Mother's Day

How do I make Mother's Day special from far away?

Send a gift that arrives on time, but pair it with a phone call or video chat where you share something specific you appreciate about her. Distance doesn't have to mean disconnection. A heartfelt note in the delivery can close the gap when you can't be there in person.

What do moms really want for Mother's Day?

When you ask moms directly, they consistently say they want to feel seen and appreciated. A YouGov survey of American mothers found that 61% want quality time with their children above all else, and experiential or personal gestures outrank material ones. Simply put, moms want acknowledgment of who they are and what they do. Browse Creative Mother's Day Gift Ideas for thoughtful optio
