Your tabletop is a blank canvas. The choice of fabrics, flowers, and candles, the layering of colors and textures, and the personal touches all affect the table's appearance and mood. You can go as big or as simple as you want, which makes setting the table one of my favorite elements of entertaining.

Here are a few easy, creative, and inexpensive fall arrangement ideas to get you started on a dinner-party centerpiece. If you're looking for something ready-made, browse our fall flower collection for seasonal arrangements.

I reuse and recycle, so I have pieces that I keep and use in different ways each season. Here, I reused my decorative pumpkin from a few years ago, filling it with flowers, grasses, peppers, and succulents in a farm-fresh palette.

I find these little berry baskets to be just the right size to use as multiples, as I did on this dining table, or to add a festive touch on a dessert or buffet table.

What you'll need to get started

Before you begin, gather your supplies. Having everything within reach makes the process go much more smoothly. Here's your starter checklist:

  • A container (a decorative pumpkin, a berry basket, or a bowl all work)
  • A small dish, bowl, or can to line the container
  • Floral foam
  • Floral snips or scissors
  • Water
  • Flowers and greenery

How to build your fall arrangement, step by step

The floral foam does most of the work here. It holds each stem in place and provides hydration to keep your flowers fresh. Follow these steps:

  1. Choose your container (reuse a decorative pumpkin, berry basket, or bowl).
  2. Line it with a small dish, bowl, or can.
  3. Cut floral foam to size and soak it thoroughly before setting it in the dish.
  4. Insert your tallest stems first to set the height.
  5. Fill in with blooms, grasses, and berries, turning the arrangement as you go.
  6. Add trailing greenery or foraged foliage last to soften the edges.

The foam makes it easy to create your piece, and the layering is where your personal style shows.

Best flowers and foliage for fall arrangements

Warm, seasonal tones are what make a fall arrangement feel like fall. When choosing your blooms, reach for colors and textures that echo the season. My favorites include:

  • Mums
  • Dahlias
  • Sunflowers
  • Roses in warm amber, rust, and burgundy tones
  • Ornamental grasses
  • Millet
  • Berry branches
  • Seasonal foliage

Mixing a few soft blooms with grasses, berries, and foliage gives depth and movement without much effort. See our guide to fall flowers and their meanings for more inspiration.

Use plants and greenery to fill out your centerpiece

Plants are a fun, fresh way to decorate your autumn table. They are affordable and have the added benefit of naturally cleaning the air in your home. The millet plants I picked up at Smile Farms are a bit taller than normal for a centerpiece, but they still work. I find that everything gets moved around once the food starts getting placed on the table anyway.

Small accents, such as green apple candles and fresh-cut succulents on each plate, can complete your look and keep the table festive after the food has been served.

You can also use small potted succulents as individual place cards that double as a take-home gift.

Do a little foraging in your garden, or a neighbor's with permission. I live by the beach, so my garden is full of ornamental beach grasses and millet. Falling leaves are everywhere this time of year, and there's an abundance of branches, berries, and grasses to use.

Keep it simple and natural by adding an LED votive candle to the center of a fresh artichoke, and place a single stem of millet and a sprig of fall foliage on each plate.

Q & A

Which flowers are best for a fall arrangement?

Warm-toned blooms carry the season best. Mums, dahlias, sunflowers, and roses in amber, rust, and burgundy tones pair well with grasses, millet, berry branches, and seasonal foliage.

How do I make a fall centerpiece for a dinner party?

Choose a container, line it with a small dish, and add soaked floral foam. Set your tallest stems first, then fill in with blooms, grasses, and berries. Finish with trailing greenery to soften the edges.

Do I need floral foam, or is there another way to keep stems in place?

Floral foam makes it easy because it holds each stem in place and keeps your flowers hydrated. If you prefer not to use it, a florist frog, a grid of tape across the container opening, or a bunch of foraged branches can hold stems as well.

How long will a fall flower arrangement last?

With soaked floral foam and fresh water, most fall arrangements stay attractive for about a week. Keep the foam damp, trim any spent stems, and keep the arrangement out of direct heat to help it last longer. For more tips, see our guide on how to keep flowers alive longer.

Can I use foraged branches and leaves in an arrangement?

Yes. Fall offers many branches, berries, grasses, and leaves. Gather from your own garden, or a neighbor's with permission, and mix them with your blooms for a natural, seasonal look.
