Rare “Corpse Flower” Set to Bloom at the New York Botanical Gardens

June 25, 2018

BRONX, NEW YORK − While we normally think of flowers as sweet-smelling, there are also flowers that are on the complete opposite spectrum such “armorphophallus titanum,” also known as a “corpse flower.” The corpse flower received its named because of its unpleasant (to put it nicely 🙂 scent. Many describe the corpse flower smell to “rotting flesh” or a “decaying carcass.”

While this flower doesn’t sound very pleasant, it is very popular because of its rarity and because of the time it takes to bloom. It has been nearly 80 years since the corpse flower last bloomed at the New York Botanical Gardens. Given the long wait, the flower may only last for just one or two days.

While relatively unpredictable, the New York Botanical Garden’s corpse flower is said to be only “seconds away from blooming.” For those that don’t want to brave the stench or are not in the area, the flower is being live-streamed on the NYBG website. This giant flower can grow to be 8 feet high and opens up to a red interior when in bloom. The odor is said to attract pollinators, such as flies, which love the rotting odor as a place to lay their eggs.

So, will you be watching the corpse flower cam to see it bloom?

Popular Purple Wedding Flowers for your Special Day

June 6, 2018

In honor of wedding season which is now upon us, we decided to ask our florists about one of the most searched for wedding flower colors: purple. It’s no surprise that purple wedding flowers are the most popular color; they work great for vineyard weddings, they pair well with both blues AND pinks, and they come in lots of pretty shades from light lavender to deep, dark purple.

Most Popular Wedding Flower Types

According to our local Carle Place florists, the top wedding flowers are:

  • Hydrangeas
  • Roses
  • Mini calla lilies
  • Stock flowers
  • Phalaenopsis orchids
  • Dendrobium orchids
  • Spray roses
  • Tulips
  • Freesia

The best part? All of these flowers are available in shades of lavender and purple.

Flower Pairings

All of these flower types can be paired up with fillers, other flowers, foliage or left by themselves.
Some good flower combinations for bouquets would be:

  • Hydrangeas, roses and mini calla lilies
  • Roses, mini calla lilies, and stock
  • Dendrobium orchids, roses, and freesia

By adding fillers and foliage to these combinations, you create texture and style. Some good filler pairings include dusty miller, seeded eucalyptus, willow eucalyptus, bulperium, hypericum, silver gray brunia, wax flower, heather, succulents, bear grass, aspidistra leaves, and other types of foliage.

If planning for a special look, using less combinations of material creates a more modern feel. An example could be all Phalaenopsis orchids with some foliage, or all tulips wrapped in aspidistra leaves. Another modern look is using all mini calla lilies.

Vintage style may contain old broaches, feathers, pearls, roses, mini calla lilies, veronica, lilacs and dusty miller.

What Is Singles’ Day?

November 7, 2017

History of Singles’ Day

Singles’ Day began at Nanjing University in China. It was initially called “Bachelor’s Day” since it started out with only young men celebrating the occasion, however, it is now celebrated by both genders. The holiday is celebrated on November 11th (11/11) because of the four single “ones,” and the Chinese name of the holiday, “Guanggun Jie,” appropriately translates to “bare sticks holiday.” The occasion started in the 1990s and has been spread throughout China and beyond. It was created to help stop the negative connotation surrounding the idea of being single, especially in universities. The holiday is celebrated with fun, uplifting activities to enjoy the fun of being single!

1-800-FLOWERS.COM Delivers Smiles to Long Island Moms for Mother’s Day

May 11, 2017

Here at 1-800-Flowers.com, we love to celebrate moms for Mother’s Day. When we were presented with the opportunity to surprise moms with flowers at the Family & Children’s Association in Hempstead, NY, we immediately said yes! The Family & Children’s Association is a non-profit organization who works to protect and strengthen vulnerable children, seniors, families and communities. The group of moms that we surprised today all have children enrolled in organizations nursery co-op program. The co-op is a short-term childcare and case management program for parents seeking to improve the individual and family circumstances through employment, education, training or support services in pursuit of self-sufficiency.

To get everyone ready for the surprise, we brought the moms in for a special Mother’s Day brunch. After eating, we took the kids into a playroom and lined them up with bouquets of Mother’s Day flowers. As the mothers came in to pick up their kids, they were surprised with beautiful bouquets from their children! Seeing their surprised faces and the love between mother and daughter/son was truly priceless! Take a look at some of the photos from the event below!
