With advice from expert gardeners, greenhouse workers, and our plant dad, Alfred Palomares, we’ve gathered the best tips for plant-parenting newbies. Our series Plant Parenting 101 will help turn you into the perfect plant parent!

With all the “plant love” happening these days I thought it would be a good time to share this little plant care video demonstrating the step by step process for repotting a plant.

Back in June my daughter Meggie, a special education teacher, asked me to do a planting activity with her 6th grade class, I thought why not turn to the experts at Smile Farms for a little help? Smile Farms Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide developmentally disabled adults with meaningful work opportunities at farms, urban gardens, greenhouses and farm stands where they can grow and sell flowers, plants and produce in their local communities.

My brother Kevin is one of the farmers employed at Smile Farms at IGHL.  And I know first-hand how proud he is of the work he does there and the positive impact that being employed and a part of the community has had on his quality of life.

As you can see from the smiles on the faces of all the farmers featured in this video that Kevin is not the only one who loves being a part of the Smile Farms family, where smiles are created one job at a time!

Currently 80% of adults with developmental disabilities in the United States are unable to find a job.  That is unacceptable and Smile Farms is doing something about it.  If you would like to learn more about Smile Farms, get involved, or donate go to:
