Celebrating Valentine’s Day in Salt Lake City

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to start planning ways to show that special someone just how much their love means to you. Surrounded by mountains, Salt Lake City, Utah provides a mixture of opportunities for a romantic night (or weekend) with your significant other. Salt Lake City has outdoor activities abound, even in the colder temperatures. Residents and visitors have access to world-class music and theater productions, and its proximity to Park City provides lovebirds in the Crossroads of the West access to some unique date-night options, too. Here are some of our favorite romantic things to do in Salt Lake City on Valentine’s Day:

City View

Visit the Up House: The beginning montage from the Disney film Up, is perhaps one of the most romantic (and heartbreaking) pieces of animated history. The tender love shown by Ellie and Carl Fredrickson summons more than a few tears every time we watch it. You can enjoy a slice of their life with a visit to an exact replica of the home featured in the film. Located just 30 minutes south of Salt Lake City in Herriman, this house is a one-of-a-kind. Disney gave one-time only permission for this home to be built (no other reproductions allowed). A family currently occupies the home, so you may not be able to tour the inside, but try bringing your own balloons for a romantic photoshoot out front. And no Disney inspired day is complete without a delivery of Disney gifts including home décor, flowers, chocolate covered strawberries and more!

Dinner at the Roof: Located in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, The Roof is one of the most romantic restaurants in the area. With stunning views overlooking the city and Temple Square, nighttime provides a particularly romantic atmosphere. The buffet-style restaurant serves delicacies like prime rib, pork roast, salmon, and shrimp. The dessert table is worth the price of admission alone! Low-lighting and live piano music make the setting perfect for a romantic Valentine’s Day Dinner. Note: The restaurant does not serve alcohol or coffee.

Visit a real-life Ice Castle: Head an hour south of Salt Lake City to Midway for a truly unique date night. Crews at the ice castle craft about 10,000 icicles a day to make sure this winter-spectacular stays in tip-top shape. The hand-crafted castle features 10-foot thick walls and unique lighting features. Surrounded by giant walls of ice and hanging icicles, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a movie.  Dress warm and make sure to buy tickets online before you go as it’s a very popular attraction.

Hot Air Balloon Ride: Take your romance to new heights, literally, with a sunrise hot air balloon flight. Despite the cool temperatures in the winter, the same fire used to take your balloon to the skies will keep you and your date toasty during the flight. Head 30 minutes up Parley’s canyon for your balloon ride over Park City, Utah. With stunning views of the mountains, you can cozy up with your sweetie for an hour-long excursion over some of the most beautiful landscapes in the West. Make your date a little more romantic by presenting your sweetheart with a beautiful bouquet of flowers during the ride, like this stunning Rose Medley arrangement.

Hot Air Balloon

Head to the Theater: Salt Lake City offers plenty of access to the arts. From the symphony to Broadway-level plays, there’s almost always an event going on downtown. Check out the Capitol Theater to enjoy a romantic night in one of the city’s most historic buildings. The charming décor provides the perfect atmosphere for an entertaining night out for two. The theater is located near plenty of restaurants and public transportation, so you can snag a bite to eat before or after the show. If you want something a little more light-hearted, the OBT (Off Broadway Theater), also located downtown, hosts improv shows and humorous twists on traditional Broadway plays.

Color Me Mine: If you’re feeling a bit crafty, head to Color Me Mine, a local studio that allows customers to choose a piece of pottery (everything ranging from saucers to teapots, plates, and platters) to design and paint. You’ll have to leave your masterpiece at the studio so they can glaze and fire your piece before you pick it up, but once it’s finished you’ll have a hand-crafted memory you can use every day! If you’re more artistically challenged, don’t worry! The studio can provide stencils and other ideas to help inspire and bring out the artist in you.

Garden Tour: The Red Butte Gardens, located at the University of Utah in downtown Salt Lake City, are open all year round. The winter months host a solstice celebration among other events. You can stroll through the gardens and the greenhouse, or take in a concert or play at the amphitheater. The Gardens regularly host art exhibits as well so make sure to check the calendar of events to see what’s going on beforehand! You’ll want to head here in the early afternoon as they close at 5 p.m. during the winter.

Snowshoe to Donut Falls:  If you love spending time in the great outdoors, snag a pair of snowshoes and a thermos of hot chocolate and head up Cottonwood Canyon to the Donut Falls trail. This easy 3-mile (round-trip) trail has a spectacular ending: a 20-foot tall waterfall. If you’re feeling brave, you can duck under the falls for a stunning view.

No matter what you plan to do this Valentine’s Day, make time to take the one you love on an adventure they’ll never forget!

  • For the true foodie, there’s nothing better than the classics done right. Make dinner reservations for two at Little Nonna’s to experience old-world Italian cuisine at its finest. We recommend ordering at least one serving of their staple: spaghetti and meatballs. Afterwards, take a trip to the renowned RIM Cafe and order any one of the many chocolate delicacies the head chocolatier René has to offer. It may not look like much, but this hidden gem is one of the best dessert places in the city. To continue the theme of Italian classics, consider booking tickets for the Tancredi opera at the Kimmel Center, which runs February 10th – 19th.
  • Beat the cold weather with a bit of Latin excitement! Plan for dinner at Alma de Cuba to surround yourselves with the vibrant atmosphere of warmer climates. We suggest lingering in the bottom level lounge for cocktails and appetizers before moving into your reserved table at the upstairs restaurant. Enjoy the many rich flavors of Latin America and the Caribbean before slipping out for Salsa dancing at The Painted Bride Art Center on Saturday February 11th with lessons starting at 8 pm and the party starting at 9 pm. This evening will be lead by Adriel Gonzalez y su Orquesta and beginners are welcome!

  • For the Francophile and French culture enthusiast, there is plenty to choose from in the local Philly dining scene. If your date loves all things French, enjoy one of the most romantic things to do in Philadelphia: a meal at Parc Brasserie, just off of Rittenhouse Square. You might also consider Bistro La Mignette for a slightly more intimate setting. For a daytime adventure, visit the Barnes Foundation from Wednesday through Monday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm for a truly unique museum experience with original works from some of the greatest French painters in history.
  • For a low-key and zen-like date idea, consider a trip to one of the best local spas Philly has to offer. This Valentine’s Day, plan for a couples massage at Le Reve Rittenhouse Spa and prepare for the ultimate luxury experience. For busy parents and professionals, sometimes the best date ideas are those that truly relax and rejuvenate. Add to the aromatic escape with a hand-picked bouquet that your date can enjoy all week long.

Valentine’s Day Dates in NYC

“The city that never sleeps” can be quite romantic and adventurous if you know where to go! Whether you’re a local Manhattanite, live in the NYC metro area, or are traveling from out of town special for Valentine’s Day, the city is filled with a never-ending array of date ideas for every type of couple. In fact, there is so much to do in New York that the amount of options can be overwhelming, even for the locals.  So bundle up, grab your honey by the hand, and take a look at some of these brilliant suggestions for an unforgettable Valentine’s Day in the “Big Apple.”

Broadway Baby

When you think of New York City, you think of Broadway, and you can never go wrong with a Broadway show date! Okay, so you may not be able to see Hamilton unless you’re willing to shell out the big bucks, but there are SO many fantastic shows to choose from. Playbill is a great resource for show discovery. Some hot ones out at the time this article was written to consider include: Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Waitress, The Color Purple, Beautiful, Kinky Boots, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, and The Book of Mormon. Money saving tip: TKTS discount booths are a great way to go if you have the time to wait online, and are looking to save some cash on your date. The show list is as available that day, and there are four different locations: Times Square, South Street Seaport, Lincoln Center, and Downtown Brooklyn. You may be better visiting the non-Times Square locations for *potentially* less people, but hey, it’s New York, and the city is always crowded. TKTS has a downloadable app too that is helpful for knowing booth open and close times. The earlier you get there, there, the better the selection choice. There may be some Off-Broadway ones that interest you too, like Avenue Q.

Explore Chinatown with Authentic Chinese Food

Chinatown is a great place if you and your sweetie love Chinese food and for some shopping, but you definitely want to make sure you pick a good place. Personally, I love Hop Kee (21 Mott Street) and have been going there for years. It’s no frills but the food is fantastic every time. Personal favs: chow fun, sweet and pungent chicken, dumplings, and chicken and broccoli in black bean sauce. Other goodies from word of mouth: Shanghai Asian Manor, Shanghai Café Deluxe, Joe’s Shanghai, and Red Farm. If you’re looking for a little something sweet after, there are tea houses in the area as well. If you’ve never tried it, bubble tea is a traditional fav. Bubble tea recs: Vive Bubble Tea & Patea Bubble Tea. Little Italy is just a short walk away from Chinatown if you’re feeling for some Italian desserts like cannolis and tiramisu instead.

Art Museums

Gosh, where to start with art museums in NYC!? There are so many good one depending on your taste.

  • 3 Admissions for the Price of 1 at The Met Museum Family: While its massive size can be a bit overwhelming, The Metropolitan Museum of Art on the Upper East Side is a personal favorite of mine because there are so many different art types to see from Egyptian to contemporary. If you buy tickets at the box office (there is usually a line and high security), there is a suggested admission of $25, but since it is just suggested, you can donate whatever you feel comfortable with to visit the museum. Insider secret: admission includes entry into ALL The Met museums. The Frick Collection for modern and contemporary art opened recently in March 2016, is a little less overwhelming due to its smaller size, and is just a few blocks away from the 5th Avenue Met. If you have the time to trek up north and if it’s nice out, The Met Cloisters is gorgeous for those who love architecture and medieval art.
  • Visit the Museum of Modern Art in midtown for contemporary art at it’s finest. Advance tickets are recommended, especially if a hot exhibit is happening.
  • Explore American art in a beautiful building at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Advance tickets are recommended.
  • Absorb international 20th century art Guggenheim in a super cool circular museum design.
  • Gallery Hopping: If you’re looking for something free and fun, in Chelsea and SoHo there are tons of art galleries to hop in and out of. It makes for a fun afternoon and helps with spontaneity.

A Romantic Walk Along the Highline

Even though it’s chilly in New York, walking along the Westside of Manhattan from the Meatpacking to Chelsea, the High Line is a great way to spend a romantic day or night with your sweetie. From sculptures to plants, there are places to sit along the way if you want to take in the scenery.

Couple Walking on The Highline

A NYC landmark, Lincoln Center isn’t only breathtaking, but it has so many different arts to choose from. Whether you’re looking for dance, opera, or orchestra, there is a little something for every art lover, at all different prices.

Dine at a Celebrity Chef’s Restaurant

Since the word “celebrity” is in this headline, a lot of the restaurants with celebrity chefs do tend to be pricey. There are some gems though that are more affordable. It is highly recommended to make a reservation. We’re only going to list a few but there are SO many more to choose from if you do a little bit of hunting. Insider tip: lunch options where available may be more affordable.

If It’s Your Thang (of If You Want it to Be), Go Whiskey Tasting

There are a ton of bars with great whiskey selections, and many who offer flights. Some of our favorites include: The Flatiron Room (also usually has classy music and an unbeatable ambience), Maysville, The Whiskey Ward & Hudson Bar & Books.

Laugh a Little at the UCB Theatre

Comedy shows can always be hit or miss but the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre has some really awesome comedians to make you laugh and is the alma mater to some super famous folk. There are also improve classes you can take with your significant other if you’re up to the challenge!

Cheer on a NY Team at an Indoor Sports Game

This is the perfect time of year to enjoy a basketball or hockey game indoors and away from the outdoor elements. Whether you like a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat game like hockey, or a high-scoring, non-stop action game like basketball, you and your date are sure to have a blast. Head on over to Barclay’s in Brooklyn for the Nets or the Islanders, or go to Madison Square Garden (MSG) for the Knicks or Rangers. While tickets at MSG are a bit pricier, we think it’s worth it for the view and fan comradery. Both are easily accessible by train, so you can safely enjoy plenty of adult beverages (and snacks, of course!).

Karaoke and Korean Food

Enjoy Korean food at one of the many restaurants in the mid-30s. I always enjoy New Wonjo but there are tons to choose from. Then continue the evening with a little karaoke to sing like no one is watching… except your significant other in a private room. This also makes for a great double date. I always enjoy Radio Star Karaoke, but there are many in walking distance in the vicinity.

Sleep No More

REALLY get into Macbeth at Sleep No More #share, which has a complete hands-on theatre experience where you wear masks and get into character. We also hear there is a Valentine’s Day special offer if it doesn’t sell out. Advance tix are necessary if you’re interested.

Couples Spa Day

If you both enjoy a day of rest and relaxation, there are so many spas all over Manhattan, but it’s tough  to find one that allows for couples. Faina European Day Spa has a couples massage package for a unique experience to enjoy with your significant other.

BYOB Art Classes

You don’t have to be a masterful artist to have an amazing date night at one of the city’s bring your own bottle art classes. Bring your date, your favorite bottle(s) of wine, and an open mind. You’ll be supplied with paint, brushes, canvases, a qualified instructor, and all of the corkscrews that you’ll need to have an eventful night. You’ll have a great time that will leave you with a masterpiece of your own making. There are a bunch of different ones to choose from (including some that are not BYOB), but Paint Along NYC is cool BYOB one to check out.

“Flip a Coin” Date Night & See Where the Night Takes You in NYC

If you and your significant other enjoy spontaneity, this may be an interesting date night for you! Simply choose a starting point in the city, we prefer Union Square or Central Park, and flip a coin to decide where the night will take you. Choose heads to make your way over to a bar around the corner or tails to take a stroll throughout Central Park. This date night is completely unplanned and that’s what makes it so exciting. Your night could begin in the Upper East Side and somehow lead you to an art gallery in the Lower East Side.

Take a Tango Class

Learning something new is a great way to spend a cold February day together, so why not take up a tango class? Triangulo in Chelsea offers basic Argentine tango classes for beginners and more advanced classes for tango lovers. Watch your dance moves steadily improve as you and your date live it up! Tango is all about getting close and moving in sync with your partner making it the perfect Valentine’s date.

If You Can Snag Tix, a “Night Under the Stars” at the Museum of Natural History

It’s sold out but we’re including it anyway in case you can snag tix some other way. There’s nothing more romantic than gazing up at the stars with the one you love. This Valentine’s Day, head over to the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space for a “Night Under the Stars.” Enjoy an open bar complete with drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and chocolates with your date while a jazz quartet performs in the background. Inside the planetarium you’ll be able to admire the constellations while an astronomer recites ancient mythological love tales based around the universe.

Valentine’s Day Ideas in Chicago

February 14th is approaching fast, so if you’re still deciding what would make the perfect Valentine’s Day date, look no further! Our Chicago dating guide takes advantage of the city’s unique offerings, from the natural scenery to the night life of River North. Whether you’re a local or you’re planning a romantic getaway, we have the perfect Valentine’s date in Chicago for you.

Chicago Skyline

Romantic Evenings

Scoot in close and watch the candles burn as you absorb each other’s presence and Chicago’s unique culture.

  • Dinner on the water. Take advantage of Chicago’s two most beautiful features, Lake Michigan and the skyline after dark.  Board the Odyssey, a luxury yacht, for a three-course dinner and dancing. Or hire a Knock Out charter to dine and explore the river at your own speed. Either way, you’ll be charmed by the lights on the water. For those partial to seasickness, there are several restaurants that overlook the river or look towards the city from Navy Pier.
  • Broadway and dine. Broadway in Chicago brings NYC to “the Loop” all year around. Grab tickets to a musical, or any other play downtown.  The Theater District is also full of fine restaurants, perfect for either a pre-show dinner or a post-show drink. Some even offer parking and valet deals with show tickets (a hot-commodity being that you’re in the center of the city!).
  • Cozy speakeasies. Dark, cozy, and shadowed, speakeasies provide the perfect excuse to sit with your thighs pressed together and forget about the world. Start the night off with underground restaurants like Hi Five Ramen (be in line before 5:30 to avoid an hour wait) or the glamourous Untitled Supper Club. Then switch to intimate bars like The Violet Hour (which most nights is identified only by the line) or Bordel known for its live entertainment.

Daytime Adventures

Not everyone is a night owl, so instead you can plan a day date! Sunlight and movement release endorphins, lifting moods to bring you closer together.

Chicago Botanical Garden
  • See Chicago with new eyes. Play tourist and learn something together! The Chicago Architecture Foundation has detailed tours on part of Chicago even residents miss, from the underground pedway system to the architecture treasures you can only see on the L. For the foodies, check out any of the chocolate, beer, coffee, or pizza tours. Or get a little more excitement by learning about Chicago’s gangster history.
  • Chicago museums. Museums are the perfect excuse to walk slowly, hand in hand, away from the Chicago wind chill. Thankfully, several of Chicago’s museums are offering free admission on Valentine’s Day, or on the weekends before and after. Grab your partner and have fun finding your favorite fish in each tank at the Shedd Aquarium or debate which baby penguin is cuter at Brookfield Zoo.

Uniquely Chicago

There’s no city like the Windy City. Take your date to the city’s highlights for an experience you can’t find anywhere else.

  • Improv Comedy. Chicago is known as a hub for comedy, especially improv thanks to being a home for Second City. For Valentine’s Day, go for something just as funny but a touch more romantic with The Improvised Shakespeare Company at the IO Theater. Two acts, in the style and theme of the bard, but completely made up on the spot. If you want something a little less highbrow, head to the Under the Gun Theater.
  • Skyscraper Views. The Willis Tower’s Skydeck is open till 8pm in February, giving perfect sunset views. Or, if you’re in the mood for food, you can have breakfast on the famous 103th floor. 360 Chicago, the John Hancock’s option further north, brings a DJ to the observation deck Thursday evenings to complement the Architect’s Corner Café and Bar. To avoid the tourists at the expensive of a lower view point, consider the Wit Hotel’s roof top bar. Close to the river, you can wave at the boats floating by below.
