Petal Talk Chats With Anthony Swick

In order to learn about the creative minds behind our handcrafted arrangements, we interviewed Anthony Swick who is featured in our Local Artisan Collection. From the daily life as a florist to some of the inspiration behind his arrangements, Anthony talks about his favorite holidays, arrangements, his family & more!

How did you get into the flower business and what do you love best about being a florist?

Amber Waves

I was in high school and had a part time job as a shop helper in eves in a Mall Florist- many years ago. My
job was keeping things clean and taking care of roses… I’ll never forget having to clean and de-thorn SO many roses at Valentine’s Day, but I smiled with every stick in my finger. While going through college and growing on my own, I then would buy roses for a little Florist and one visit got me in back making my own, that how the passion got in me. I love the opportunity to create and share such wonderful things and now as an educator and working within the industry, it has made my passion even stronger knowing that I can help someone else find their passion and they can bloom.

What are your favorite flowers?

Calla! No question. This has always been my most favorite as to its masculine and feminine qualities. The ways you can design with it and the pure look makes me thrilled to challenge any design with a calla! Our logo at my stores!

Can you tell us a little bit about Florida? What is your favorite thing about living there?

The weather!!! I can not imagine living in a cold climate. Being originally for the north, I was blessed to enjoy the “beach life” very young. I’d rather clean up sand in my car than to scrap the ice off my windows!!!

What has been the most rewarding experience during your florist tenure?

Being a part of AIFD. The journey to become AIFD and the opportunity to present 2 stage programs at symposium has been the most rewarding. I love sharing, the chance to grow personally and maybe share something that others can grow from. Teaching at Floriology and presenting for Bloomnet has just made the journey even more rewarding for me as a designer.

What is the weirdest thing you have seen or experienced during your floral career?

Wow… only one…? There are many after this many years. I’d have to say the one that sticks the most with me was having to go to a clients home, his wife had past, but they were having visiting hours at the home and he wanted me to put on her favorite flower corsage and flowers in her hair to match. At my age, we didn’t go to homes just to funeral homes.

What is your favorite floral occasion?

Weddings for sure. To have the honor in sharing such a lifelong memory and the opportunity to become close with a client on such a deep level is beyond my favorite

What inspired you to design your local exclusive arrangements?

When working with fall items and I saw the classic look of the mosaic vase, the colors were so beautiful. I could imagine the colors of fall, no matter where you live and I was drawn to the flower selection. Working with those colors and pulling in the tones of the roses was just a simple yet perfect fit!

What is your favorite Local Exclusive design that you’ve made and why?

Hand-tied rose & hydrangea flower arrangement

I love the “hand tied rose and hydrangea” design. This design is my take on the traditional style roses. To me it appeals more to today’s buyers and incorporates beautiful hydrangea, creating a more trendy and up to date look on the ever loved classic.

What do you love most about your local community?

Tampa is a big city/ small town. It’s not the largest metropolitan city, but we enjoy the art, sports, large event and concerts. There are people whom have been here for generations and you have a feeling of Home. You tend to know your neighbors like a small
Town.

What are some “Fun Facts” that your customers don’t know about you?

Shoes… I love shoes. I have so many and it gets out of hand some time. But my favorite, which I have about 6-8 at all times, are kinos. They are from key west and they are more flip/ sandals. Like I’m wearing nothing. If I’m not in one of those, I have a wide range of shoes that I love to wear. Look out travel, my shoe bag is normally bigger than my garment bags.

What makes you smile?

My boys! I have 2 sons who are the light of my life. Nothing better than those boys. Good and bad, I smile about their accomplishments and growth everyday.

Simple Ikebana

How did you get into the flower business and what do you love best about being a florist?
Before opening up our own shop, I had 10 years of floral design experience. I wanted to start my own small business. What I love best is the ability to share in the happy moments of our customers.

Local Exclusive Product Names:
Our local exclusive product names are the the Simple Ikebana, Home Sweet Desert Terrarium, and Simple and Sincere Dendrobiums.

What inspired you to design your local exclusive arrangements?
I specialize in Ikebana floral arrangement. The “Simple Ikebana” arrangement is the start of a series. As for the Home Sweet Desert Terrarium, I wanted to put a unique twist on the typical planters to make it more interesting and appealing. Finally, many arrangements contain a large variety of colors. I wanted to create something that’s not so busy with color, and make it simple, modern, and elegant, and thus, The Simple and Sincere Dendrobiums was born.

What do you love most about your local community?
I live in a very diverse community. We have a mixture of many cultures, and different generations of people. A well balanced mix of both old and new where the people are friendly and courteous.

What are your favorite flowers?
Peony (for their fragrance and colors), and Sun Flowers (they are very bright and cheery). I also love Zinnia (nice summer flowers with a large variety of colors), they bring back fond childhood memories.

What has been the most rewarding experience during your florist tenure?
I find the ability to express myself artistically through flowers to be the most rewarding.

What is your favorite floral occasion?
Weddings and Christmas are my two favorite floral occasions. Wedding arrangements are much more personalized. The opportunity to create unique and beautiful pieces is very exciting. Christmas arrangements help create a warm atmosphere when families and friends gather.

Candle Lit Dreams

What has been the most rewarding experience during your florist tenure?
The most rewarding experience is actually the dozens of calls and letters. Each time a customer calls ecstatic about their flowers, I am reminded why I got into this business. The small tokens of appreciation from customers truly make my days worth while..

What is your favorite floral occasion?
Even though it isn’t really an occasion, my favorite would be the surprise gift. It makes me so happy to be a part of such a spontaneous act of kindness. Other occasions are fun to design, but nothing quite compares to knowing I helped make someone’s day.

What is the weirdest thing you have seen or experienced during your floral career?
One day, my employee was unloading a fresh order of plants in the back. I heard her scream, and she said she saw a giant bug in the box. I went to go help her, but when she showed me the box, a tiny frog jumped out! It was a funny little surprise and very unexpected.

What are some “Fun Facts” that your customers don’t know about you?
I keep a small catalog of hammocks in my desk drawer. When I’m having a tiring day, I look through the pictures and fantasize about my time off.

What makes you smile?
When regular customers come back to check in or call to thank me for their arrangements, I can’t keep the smile off my face.

Stunning Symphony Bouquet

How did you get into the flower business and what do you love best about being a florist?
Ever since walking home after school at age eleven, I knew that I loved the flowers business. What I love most is bringing smiles to customer faces; everyone is always so happy to receive, plants, or a fruit bouquet.

Local Exclusive Product Names:
Our local exclusive product names are the Stunning Symphony Bouquet, the Delightful Daisy Bouquet and the Mystic Island Bouquet.

What inspired you to design your local exclusive arrangements?
I was inspired to design the Stunning Symphony Bouquet by the colors of the season; it has some lovely pink, white, and purple blooms which blend beautifully with the great keepsake watering can. The Delightful Daisy Bouquet was inspired to be a bright colorful and cheerful arrangement. The Mystic Island Bouquet was inspired from the tropics, I love the Caribbean. All the flowers in the arrangement remind me of the islands.

What is the weirdest thing you have seen or experienced during your floral career?
I would have to say a customer coming into the store and requesting a box of all the dead flowers and delivering them to his ex girlfriend.

Petal Talk Chats with Woburn, Massachusetts Florist Lisa Sandoe

Local florist Lisa Sandoe has 1800Flowers flower shops in Woburn and Melrose, Massachusetts and has been in the floral business for over 25 years.

flower shop Woburn, Massachusetts

Lisa did a question and answer session to talk about her flowers experience, local city, favorite flower seasons and most unique arrangements.

How did you get into the flower business and what do you love best about being a florist?
I got into the floral business about 25 years ago.  My friend got me a job at the flower shop that she worked at, part time, temporary employment, until I figured out what I wanted to do with my life. The job fit me like a glove. I was hired to answer phones, water plants, make displays, clean up etc.  Within the first year I learned to design. My friend who managed the shop left, and I was promoted to manager.

What are your favorite flowers?
I love the season of the flowers, like the seasons of New England. Winter with its fragrant winter greens, like balsam, pine and boxwood, has a totally different feeling compared to say spring with all of the bulbs, iris, daffodils etc. The flower seasons, like New England seasons, are in my opinion breathtaking.

Can you tell us a little bit about Woburn, Massachusetts? What is your favorite thing about living there?
I have lived in New England all of my life, I grew up in Lexington, Mass (where it all started) then moved to Woburn, right next door for 16 years. Woburn is where I opened my first flower shop, and where it remains today. Melrose is where I opened my first beautiful retail 1800flower shop, also where it remains today, changing like the seasons.

What has been the most rewarding experience during your florist tenure?
For so many years, being a local florist has become a huge part of who I am and who my friends are.  I have had customers who have stuck around since I first opened my doors, people who buy flowers from me for special occasions, those who buy flowers much more frequently, business acquaintances who have me decorate for their Christmas parties and send flowers for office promotions year after year.  And then there are those, who believe it or not, are some of my favorite, those who stop by often to say “hi,” or tell me about the terrible flowers they saw at an event that another florist did. They will stop by and give me homemade cookies or breads at Christmastime.  Although, I almost never make much of a profit from these long time customers, they lift me up and make me realize that I have become very much part of my community.

What is the weirdest thing you have seen or experienced during your floral career?
Since I have fulfilled so many odd floral requests, the weird has become normal-ish.  Last week for example, the Manager at my Melrose location was asked by one of her good long-time customers to make an easel spray for a family member that looked like a white tiger, which she did.  I saw it and it did look just like a white tiger’s face with black pipe cleaners to line the eyes and nose – quite a work of art actually.  But, again I didn’t even think to take a picture, because we do odd things all the time with flowers.  I think however, the oddest thing we had to do, even though we tried to tell the sender that it would be very unusual,  was to write ” bomb squad ” across the #40 banner of the funeral spray in large letters. The deceased was on the bomb squad years prior to her death, and although what’s usually written on any funeral banner is who the deceased was to the sender of the flowers, they insisted we write “Bomb Squad ” across the banner, since members of the bomb squad were sending the flowers. Oh, well…

What is your favorite floral occasion?
I don’t think I have a favorite floral occasion.  That’s a bit like asking what a New Englander’s favorite season is, they all have good points. I think that it’s the people that I am arranging flowers with and the customers I am doing the work for that make each event my favorite at the time, it’s always changing.
