Gratitude Near & Far Makes A 1-800-Flowers.com Thanksgiving

Erika K., Local Artisan

To kick off the festive season of appreciation and gratitude, here at 1-800-Flowers.com we reached out near and far—to some of our florists around the country, to workers at Smile Farms, and to people at our Long Island headquarters—and asked them to share what they’re thankful for, and how they enjoy counting and sharing their blessings.

“I’m most thankful for a very supportive and loving family,” says Erika Kiss of Sandra’s and Donath’s Florist in Manhattan. “Sticking together… nothing is impossible.”

Rita S., Local Artisan

Rita of Seifert’s Flower Mill in North Canton, Ohio is most thankful for her faith. “I’m known for saying, ‘You have the power.’ I could not have this confidence without my gift of faith,” she reports, adding: “I want to thank my husband, family, and friends. This business is demanding, so it’s wonderful having a great support team.” Kiss feels the same, especially about her mom. “I’m lucky that my 78-year-old mother is my business partner. This allows me to spend extra time with her on a daily basis.”

Do florists fill their own homes with flowers for the holidays? “Yes,” Rita reports. “Flowers let your family and guests know they’re special. No matter where you live or the size of your home, flowers bring joy to all!” Kiss’s home is filled with flowers too. “I want to raise my daughter to see how much love, dedication, and planning goes into having a successful holiday at home while still making sure your customers have a magical holiday as well,” says Kiss.

Lisa C., VP Marketing

At 1-800-Flowers.com headquarters in Carle Place, many were eager to share what they’re most grateful for, what their favorite traditions are… and one memorable story about a turkey.

Brian L., Retail Store

“I’m thankful that for the first time in more than ten years my entire immediate family will be together for Thanksgiving,” says Kelly, a graphic designer, one of several who mentioned family. “I’m grateful for my niece,” says Lisa, a vice president of marketing. “She’s six and can find joy and laughter in everything she does. She’s my favorite person.” Says Pete, of the Business Gifting Services department: ““I’m grateful for my family, of course, and for my father beating cancer this past year.” Tim, vice president of florist operations, is thankful that all of his daughter’s hard work practicing soccer paid off. “She’s now the goalie of her team,” he reports, “and she loves it.”

Brian G., Mailroom

It’s not just family, though. “I’m grateful to be able to meet and talk to all the people I deliver flowers to, at Thanksgiving and throughout the rest of the year,” says Brian, who works in the 1-800-Flowers.com store in the building (and recently, thankfully, walked away from a serious car crash with just a scratch). Brian G. will be at his sister’s house for dinner this year, and he didn’t need to think long before deciding what he’s grateful for: “Happiness,” he says.

Then there’s the food, both making it and eating it: “My mom, my aunt, my cousin, and I spend the entire day before cooking for a giant Italian feast. We have a seven-course meal at my aunt’s house,” says Amanda, a product development manager. “Yes, we wear stretchy pants.”

Michael J., Display Marketing

“My family has about 25 people at the table now,” says Michael J. in Display Marketing, “but we were once up to 50. We also used to hunt for the turkey that my grandmother would cook. We’ve been having a pumpkin pie eating contest for years.” Michael S. in Legal tells us: “Someone has to make my great grandmother’s stuffing. It’s awful, but it gets made every year. Seriously, it’s horrible even when made well.”

(Opinions on cranberry sauce varied. Some favor the canned, jellied variety. Others prefer it fresh, homemade. Still others avoid the condiment—and the controversy—entirely.)

Thanksgiving is an occasion for traditions, especially, and there are some unique ones, like Pajama Thanksgiving: “My whole family wears pajamas for the holiday, some 20 people ranging in age from 2 to 68,” says Edward. “One year,” says Michael S., “the whole family, as young as 7, as old as 80, all wore turkey hats we’d made from construction paper. There’s a great photo of all of us around the table.” Pete tells: “We play an annual flag football game—dads and kids—on Thanksgiving morning.” (More than one person who used to play football on Thanksgiving now enjoys just watching it on TV.)

Jeanne B., Receptionist

And, finally, there’s the memory shared by Jeanne, 1-800-Flowers.com’s cherished receptionist:

“My grandmother, who we called Nana, born in 1900, every year for many years told the story of winning a turkey—a live turkey—at a movie theater in the Bronx, where she lived in her late teens or early twenties. She entered a raffle, her number was called, and she was given a live turkey to take home. So she walked it home on the end of a string. This was about a week before Thanksgiving. For the holiday, the family cooked the turkey… but Nana couldn’t eat it. She used to tell this story while we ate Thanksgiving dinner. Every year.”

Thomas, Smile Farms at IGHL
Michelle, Smile Farms at IGHL

A visit to Smile Farms at IGHL in Moriches, New York—where developmentally disabled adults grow and tend flowers, plants, and fresh produce—provided an opportunity to speak with some truly appreciative individuals.

Thomas, for one, is grateful for the people at Smile Farms, but he’s especially thankful for his sister. Michele, a farmer for 20 years is thankful to be able to help others, and for her health. (Her favorite thing about Thanksgiving, though, is “turkey,” she says. “Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, apple pie, pumpkin pie, and cheesecake!”)

Casey, Smile Farms at IGHL
Justine, Smile Farms at IGHL

Justine is thankful for her family and friends at Smile Farms and at home. “I love it here,” she says. Casey agrees. “I’m very thankful for the job that I have now,” he says. “I would like to say thank you to Eileen and the rest of the staff.”

And Ashley is particularly thankful for her friend Sara. “I love her,” Ashley says.

Ashley, Smile Farms at IGHL

Everyone at 1-800-Flowers.com—and at our entire Family of Brands—hopes this Thanksgiving will be an enjoyable holiday full of good food, warm memories, and opportunities for one and all to express ourselves to those who mean the most to us.

Birthday Cakes Redesigned: Introducing New Floral Cakes

For centuries, indulgent birthday cakes have served as a celebration staple. But, as the years go by, and sweet-toothed kids become health-conscious adults, birthday girls and boys begin to despise the treat they once adored. So, what if there was a guilt-free alternative that allowed you to have your cake, and not eat it too? Lucky for you 1-800-Flowers.com offers the Birthday Wishes Flower Cake – a 3-D sculpture arrangement that embodies the essence of this traditional treat without the calories! Party-goers, feast your eyes on this innovative and guiltless take on a birthday favorite.

Flower Birthday Cake

Transforming Traditions

Just over 20 years ago, the flower cake we know and love was just a mere thought! At the time, 1800Flowers.com had just introduced the Holiday Flower Tree®. As one of the first 3-D sculpture arrangements, this Christmas tree flower configuration revolutionized the way people thought about flower arrangements, and met immediate success. From that moment, flower specialists knew they were on to something. They began searching for other opportunities to bring classic symbols to life; this time, focusing on one that can be sold year round.

With careful thought, the company chose the birthday cake – after all, there’s hundreds of birthdays everyday! And, what better way to develop this flavorful floral design than with a competitive ‘bake-off?’ Member florists were invited to submit ideas and designs. Finally, a winner, who’s realistic floral layer cake looked good enough to eat, was chosen! Like its holiday predecessor, this arrangement received lots of praise and became a continuous favorite.

Getting Better with Age

For years, the Floral Cake has been serving up birthday surprises! But, now, there’s more to look forward to than more candles. With new bright and brilliant flowers and features, these flower birthday cakes will have them smiling all year long! Whether sending birthday flowers in pretty pastels, popping purple, or radiant rainbow, our new color options will help you match the recipient’s personality and preferences to his or her floral gift.

And, to make these redesigned cakes even sweeter, you can now make milestone flower birthday cakes more personalized. With extra floral flair, the new Milestone edition of the Birthday Wishes Flower Cake™ Pastel includes a 40th, 50th or 60th floral decoration to mark a wonderful year to come. What better way to reminisce on beautiful lifelong memories than with an additional touch of birthday magic?

Flower Birthday Cake

No matter which way you slice it, having a birthday cake and blowing out candles gives you a chance to reflect on the year that has passed, prepare for new beginnings, and wish for a healthier, happier year. Don’t pass up on this moment just because you can’t bear a sugary slice of cake! Because the Birthday Wishes Flower Cake™ highlights our favorite parts of the traditional birthday cake, – the vibrant colors, the decorative details and, of course, the candles – it eliminates the guilt and is truly something worth wishing for!

Pencils of Promise 2016 Gala

NEW YORK, NY – On Wednesday, October 26th, 2016, Pencils of Promise celebrated their 6th annual Gala at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan. In case you didn’t catch last year’s Gala post, Pencils of Promise (PoP) is a non-profit organization that supports education for children in developing countries by building schools, supporting teachers, providing school supplies, and overall increasing educational opportunities for children in Ghana, Guatemala, Laos and Nicaragua.

For the sixth year in a row, 1-800-Flowers.com has been honored to donate the floral centerpieces for the annual gala. This year, the arrangements featured a mix of monstera leaves, ti leaves, monstera, sago palms, dracaenas and raphis palms to give the room a tropical rainforest feel. Jay Casiano, the designer from PlantShed NY Flowers, told us “I loved the opportunity to create the centerpieces and step and repeat for POP’s Gala last night. It’s so easy when you have such a cutting edge organization to work with. Always thinking out of the box and allowing artistic freedom from their partners! We can’t wait to do this all over again!”

“We are delighted to support Pencils of Promise, as we recognize the importance of education and training to help individuals grow both professionally and personally.”

– Chris McCann, President, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM

Always entertaining (literally), the event started out with an engaging dance performance directed by celebrity choreographer, Luam.

Next was a performance by the singing duo Nico & Vinz who sang their hit “Am I Wrong,” which reached number 1 on the American Top 40 Charts in 2014.

nico-and-vinz

After the amazing performance by Nico & Vinz, Pencils of Promise Founder, Adam Braun, took the stage. Adam got the idea for Pencils of Promise when he was an India and a small boy said that the thing he wanted most was a pencil. Seeing the happiness in this little boys eyes when he gave him the pencil gave him an idea.
As Adam backpacked across over 50 countries, he handed out pencils to more and more children and saw the extreme need for schools and educational materials in developing countries. Since starting the organization, over 300 schools have been built, over 4,000 scholarships have been distributed, and over 500 teachers have been supported in receiving a high quality education.

Following Adam Braun was the Womble Family who received The Philanthropist Award for their work with the Collis Foundation, a family foundation that focuses on children’s education, scholarships, literacy programs and basic human needs.

With auction items ranging from exclusive Stuart Weitzman shoes to a saxophone signed by Bill Clinton, bids started pouring in. Over $300,000 was raised during the auction alone. $50,000 was raised for the expansion of literacy, $90,000 was raised to build 3 schools, $70,000 was raised to fund a WASH infrastructure for 7 communities, $30,000 was raised for providing e-readers to a classroom of students, and another $30,000 was raised to educate 1,200 kids for one year.

After the auction, it was time for the grand finale: a performance by famed rap artist Wiz Khalifa. Wiz closed out the night by performing his hits, “Black and Yellow,” “Roll Up,” and “See You Again.” The crowd joined him around the stage with glow sticks and sang along. They danced, too, of course!

Take Your Child to Work Day 2016

CARLE PLACE, NY – On Thursday, April 29th, 2016, 1-800-Flowers.com celebrated Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day at the corporate headquarters in Long Island. Every year 1-800-Flowers.com has an amazing time participating in Take Your Child to Work Day, to help teach today’s youth about different employment opportunities.

group-of-kids-take-your-child-to-work-day

This year’s Take Your Child to Work Day agenda was a “home run!” In addition to taking a tour to learn about different areas of our business from marketing to merchandising, our young guests also received hands-on decorating and design experience. From a floral design class with one of our top designers, to dipping strawberries in chocolate from one of our FruitBouquets.com experts, to creatively decorating Cheryl’s cookies and popcorn balls, the kids had a lot of fun, while learning, too! As an added bonus, the children also got to meet a very special guest! But enough writing, we’ll let the pictures do the talking to give you a “play-by-play” of this special day!

Decorating Chocolate Strawberries with FruitBouquets.com

The kids started out the day with a presentation about FruitBouquets.com. Talented Designer Diana taught the kids all of her tricks of the trade on how to dip the perfect chocolate covered strawberries! Within minutes, the kids were able to create (and eat :)) their own chocolate berries!

Flower Design 101

After learning about how FruitBouquets.com makes the perfect chocolate berry, the boys and girls embarked on their next class: flower design 101! Floral Designer & Teacher Phil DeVito taught the kids how to create beautiful Mother’s Day flowers for their mom. After all, Mother’s Day IS around the corner. Using a colorful fresh flower assortment with everything from yellow and purple daisies, to white monte casinos, the kids had a fun and educational time arranging flowers just like a pro!

Next on the agenda was a fun-filled creative lesson of decorating cookies like our bakers at Cheryl’s, and decorating popcorn balls from our friends at The Popcorn Factory. Jessica, Ryan and Josephine, in marketing for the Great Food Brands, stepped in to help lend their expertise! With a wide variety of toppings from candy corn to sprinkles and more, the kids started to let their creative juices flow to start decorating… while sneakily eating some snacks, too!

Hitting a “Home Run” with New York Mets Mascot, Mr. Met

Just before a pizza party lunch, the kids received a visit from a very special guest… Mr. Met! They even got a professional photo with the New York Mets baseball “celebrity!”

Some of the adult helpers got a little “star struck” and snuck in a photo with Mr. Met, too! 😉

The kids wrapped up the day with a tour through the 1-800-Flowers offices and returned to their parents with all of their crafts and snacks from the day!

This year, Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work® Day celebrated its 23rd anniversary as a national, public education program. The foundation takes a community-based approach that involves workplaces, schools, mentors, and parents, allowing children to connect school teachings with real-life careers.

Pencils of Promise 2015 Gala

Sunflower Pencils of Promise Centerpiece

NEW YORK, NY – On Wednesday, October 21, 2015, Pencils of Promise celebrated their 5th annual gala at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan. Pencils of Promise is a global community that believes everyone has the right to quality education, and takes action for the cause by raising funds to build schools in countries where children are often deprived of that very right such as Ghana (Africa), Guatemala (Central America), and Laos (Southeast Asia).

Since 2009, Pencils of Promise has grown leaps and bounds building 319 schools, with 33,856 students served! Even though PoP has made amazing progress, with 250 million children lacking basic reading, writing, and math skills, they believe there is more to be done, which is what brings us to the reason for tonight’s gala.

For all five galas, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM has been thrilled to have the opportunity to work with and support Pencils of Promise, and are honored to have donated the education inspired sunflower centerpieces for this year’s event.

pencils-of-promise-centerpiece

1-800-Flowers.com Vice President of Brand Strategy Lisa Hendrikson manages the Pencils of Promise relationship and enthusiastly stated: “1800Flowers is proud to be a longtime supporter of Pencils of Promise. Partnering with this amazing organization over the past 6 years, including our Prom Program and support for all 5 galas, has allowed us to witness the amazing growth of schools and students firsthand. 1800Flowers’ mission is to deliver smiles and we look forward to a continued relationship with Pencils of Promise in their efforts to deliver smiles through education worldwide.”

Everyone Has Promise Chalkboard Art

To kick off this year’s Gala, Adam Braun, Gala Host and Founder & CEO of Pencils of Promise, introduced a very special musical guest… John Legend!  After speaking about the importance of education around the world in addition to praising Pencils of Promise for the amazing work they do, John also delighted the audience with his amazing voice by singing “Bridge Over Troubled Water” followed by his GRAMMY Award winning hit “All of Me,” while playing piano.

John Legend Singing His Hit “All Of Me”

Although Mr. Legend was a hard act to follow, the Gala continued by honoring extraordinary Pencils of Promise supporters.  Leslie Engle Young, PoP Director of Impact started as Country Director in Laos and now helps the entire international team who she describes to be “the most inspiring people in the world.”  PoP CEO Michael Dougherty was one of the next speakers who “got hooked” to the organization through his 3 daughters. In addition to dedicating two schools to both John Legend and his manager for their gala contribution, Michael also shared his heartfelt connection to PoP by telling heart wrenching stories of witnessing illiteracy around the world firsthand. “A life of literacy is light and full… Let’s guide them to a literate life,” encouraged Dougherty.

The next speaker and honoree was Mike Weiss, VP of Growth for Maple Food Co., and Founding Member and current Board Member of PoP.  Adam and Mike were friends since middle school and Mike told stories about the early days of Pencils of Promise.  He thanked his parents for his education (who were in the audience) and expressed how much PoP has positively impacted his life, and how fortunate he feels to continue to help kids around the world receive quality educations. The next honoree of the evening was Salesforce & Salesforce Foundation, a longtime supporter of PoP. Salesforce Foundation President Suzanne Dibianca and Salesforce.org CEO Rob Acker accepted the honor.  While helping Pencils of Promise which they described as a joy and an honor, Suzanne mentioned how much they themselves have learned from Adam, who gave the great advice to “think big, keep it simple, and stay focused.” Rob Acker & Suzanne Dibianca.

Another speaker who took the stage to tell his heartfelt Pencils of Promise story was PoP Guatemala Country Director, Jorge Bolom.  As a native Mayan language speaker, Jorge spoke about the difficulty in writing, reading, and speaking in Spanish like his teachers. Thanks to a scholarship he received, he was able to continue in education, and now helps with the PoP initiatives in Guatemala which gives him great joy.

Jorge Bolom, PoP Guatemala Country Director

Last year’s Gala Honoree and CEO of Vaynermedia, Gary Vaynerchuk spoke next about his love and respect for PoP, followed by an introduction to the lively Auctioneer, CK Swett who then took the stage to start the live auction.  Live auction items included an exciting mixture of donation gifts: Wine Tasting with Gary Vaynerchuk, #EDUCATIONLIFTS Artwork by Kelsey Montague (recently made famous by Taylor Swift), a Vaynermedia Internship, the Malala Experience featuring a screening of her new movie, the Clinton Experience including getting a chance to attend an event with the former President himself!, and the Usher Dance Experience which Usher himself presented!  During the auction, CK Swett enthusiastically emphasized, “We’re building schools!!”

Other cool things to note about this awesome organization include: every dollar donated goes directly to their education programs, all Local Leaders for the schools are from the country they’re leading, and every school opened to date is successfully educating students daily and is fully operational.

If you’d like to learn more about Pencils of Promise, please visit their website at pencilsofpromise.org and thanks to everyone at the organization for the amazing work they do, and for allowing 1800Flowers to be part of it.
