Celebrating Local Food, Flowers and Philanthropic Endeavors

We recently announced a special “charity of choice” here at 1800Flowers.com—Smile Farms!

Smile Farms

Smile Farms is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the unemployed—and often forgotten— developmentally disabled neighbors in our communities across the country. They’re focused on providing meaningful work opportunities to these adults at local farms, urban gardens, greenhouses and farm stands where they can grow and sell flowers and produce in the communities where they live.

Moreover, they’re dedicated to rallying our neighbors (individuals, small businesses and civic organizations) to support the purchase of these products so that together we’re taking care of each other. Because, just like us, Smile Farms believes that our communities are stronger when everyone has a stake in them—and that together is smart.
Even better—Smile Farms is certified American Grown!

Field to Vase Dinner Sign

American Grown is an organization that unites small and large flower farms all over the U.S., by branding them an “American Grown” farm, which allows purchasers and consumers to know that the flowers they are buying are domestic grown flowers with high quality, freshness, and consistency.
American Grown hosts a special experience called “Field to Vase Dinner’s,” which are small, intimate gatherings that provide a farm-to-table celebration in unique settings, and encourage lively conversations.

So we’ve all partnered together to do something exceptional next week!

On August 20th, 2015 Smile Farms and 1800Flowers.com will be personally delivering smiles to the tables of the Field-To-Vase Dinner in Brooklyn, NY as Smile Farms is the featured Certified American Grown farm of the night!

Together we will be providing flowers, spices, and ready to pick produce for a memorable 4-course dinner on the rooftop of the Brooklyn Grange! Working hand-in-hand with guest chef Thomas Kearney of The Farm on Adderley, we’ll further the Smile Farms message: Creating Jobs, Growing Goodness & Helping Our Neighbors!

1800Flowers Celebrates Take Your Child to Work Day 2015!

CARLE PLACE, NY – On Thursday, April 23, 2015, a group of enthusiastic children of 1-800-Flowers.com employees visited the offices to celebrate Take Your Child to Work Day.

The were first greeted by Maureen Paradine, Senior Vice President of Human Resources where they were given a run-down of the fun activities they had in store for the day. After the greeting, the children were joined by Jay Coronel, Director of Vendor Relations where they learned all about growing flowers.

After they’ve had their fill of floral fun, Diana Wrenn, Associate Designer at Fruit Bouquets guided the children through a presentation all about Fruit Bouquets! The children were treated to a fun presentation where they learned about the fun possibilities with fruit and even had an opportunity to decorate their own fruit with chocolate and decorative sprinkles.

After their sweet fruit seminar, the children continued to channel their creativity with a fun floral arranging class at our own 1-800-Flowers.com Carle Place retail store! After they created their own floral arrangements, the fun didn’t stop there! The group was then joined by Jessica Banker, Manager of Interactive Marketing from the Great Food Brands, to give them an overview of our Great Foods portfolio while separating the children into groups to prepare for their planned group project.

At this point, the children certainly earned their lunch! They were treated to a pizza lunch joined by their parents where they could share their experiences from the first part of the day.

Once lunch was over, the children were treated to a tour around the office where they could catch a glimpse at how their parents work. The children then took part in a fun and relaxing activity to finish up the day; with help from Fine Stationery, they had the opportunity to make their own personalized cards. They were then picked up to be taken home by their parents, where they were anxious to share all of the fun things they had learned and experienced from the day!

NEW YORK, NY – On October 22, 2014 Pencils of Promise (PoP) celebrated their 4th annual Gala at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. “Everyone has a promise” is the organization’s mission as they help raise funds for education programs and operations in locations where it is needed the most such as Ghana (Africa), Guatemala (Central America), and Laos (Southeast Asia). PoP also encourages young leaders around the world to take positive action both locally and globally.

1-800-FLOWERS.COM has been thrilled to work with the organization for the past five years including the support of all four Galas, and was honored to be able to donate the education inspired floral centerpieces for the event.

Every year the PoP Gala honors very important individuals that have a positive impact on education. Hosted by Founder & CEO of Pencils of Promise Adam Braun, this year’s honorees included Actress and Activist Sophia Bush, CEO of Vaynermedia Gary Vaynerchuk, and PoP Chairman & CMO of Scooter Braun Projects Brad Haugen. Honoree remarks took place following the cocktail reception and dinner. Although Sophia Bush couldn’t be there in person, she spoke to the audience via a heartfelt video to communicate how much she loves the mission of PoP, and how honored she was to receive the award.

“We are delighted to support Pencils of Promise, as we recognize the importance of education and training to help individuals grow both professionally and personally.”

1-800-FLOWERS.COM Vice President, Brand Strategy, Lisa Hendrikson who manages our PoP relationship says, “We are proud to be avid supporters of Pencils of Promise for the past five years. Last year, we launched our prom program where a portion was donated to the organization from all corsages and boutonnieres sold in our flower shops and online. With the proceeds raised, we have successfully been able to build classrooms for students in need which is the best gift of all.”
