Thanksgiving Craft for Kids: How to Make a Potted Plant Turkey

Thanksgiving Potted Plant Turkey Craft for Kids

Thanksgiving is a time for family, reminiscing, and of course a feast featuring the star of the holiday: turkey. While the adults are busy making toasts and catching up, let the kids gobble up some fun with Thanksgiving crafts for kids!

Set up a crafting station where the children can turn potted plants into festive and fun turkey with this simple idea. You can choose to decorate an existing potted plant or use this craft to decorate brown ceramic pots which you can then fill with your favorite fall flowers (we used mums).

Be sure to alter the size of your feathers and turkey body to reflect the size of your arrangement.

To make the turkey body, first cut out a turkey body shape (similar to a peanut) out of the brown foam.

Glue the googly eyes to the top of the head. Then, attach the red balloon using glue in the middle of the head area – this will serve as the wattle. Cut out a small triangle from the yellow construction paper and glue on top of the red balloon for the beak. Set the turkey body aside to dry.

Next, it’s time to decorate with feathers! Cut 2 large triangle out of the remaining brown foam. Then, use glue to attach the feathers to one of the foam triangles in a straight row. Once you’re satisfied with how the feathers look, take the second triangle to “sandwich” the feathers between the foam (and hide the glue). Hold for 3-5 seconds to secure, then glue the triangle to the back of the pot.

Now your turkey is ready for showing off!

Celebrate Arbor Day with These Fun Facts and Tree Planting Tips

Arbor Day is an internationally celebrated holiday that has its own date in each country depending on the climate and planting seasons of the region. In the United States, Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April; this year, it falls on April 28.

What is Arbor Day?

Arbor Day is a day to celebrate the role trees have in our lives. People and communities are encouraged to plant trees as well as care for existing trees in their neighborhood.

History of Arbor Day

While observances and celebrations honoring trees have been practiced throughout history, the first official Arbor Day as we know it today was celebrated in 1872 in Nebraska. One specific pioneer, Julius Sterling Morton, was primarily responsible for organizing the official holiday and helping spread its popularity; for that reason, he is known as the “founder of Arbor Day.”

5 tips for planting trees

1. Pick a prime location

Take into consideration buildings around the space as well as any power or plumbing lines nearby. Make sure you check any zoning rights with your local township to make sure you can legally plant in your chosen spot.

2. Water your tree with care

The first watering after you plant your tree is crucial. Make sure you water as soon as possible and avoid letting it dry out too much.

3. Research your specific type of tree to make sure it is the right fit

Make sure you are planting it in its rightful climate as well as during the right season. Double check specific fertilizer suggestions and watering amounts.

4. Never underestimate the power of mulch

Mulching around your tree can help keep it healthy as well as control competition from weeds. While mulching is important, over-mulching should be avoided as well.

5. Keep up with care

Don’t let all that tree planting effort go to waste by neglecting your tree after the fact. Water, feed, and fertilize your plant as necessary, and watch it bloom from a baby tree to one that towers over you!

Claude Monet

Fans of Monet know that it is not just his Impressionist style that is instantly recognizable; his appreciation of nature as both inspiration and as a subject matter is just as widely known. In fact, many would find it difficult to think about Monet’s greatest works without instantly thinking of his garden-inspired series, which was painted in his famous “Monet’s Gardens,” pictured below.

How to Decorate a Graduation Cap with Flowers

Graduation is a special day, and one way to stand out from the crowd is by adding your own personal flair to your grad cap! Here is an easy yet stunning graduation cap decoration idea using artificial flowers and hot glue.

Choose flower varieties and colors that represent your personality. For example, sunflowers represent a sunny and jolly disposition, while lilies are a wonderful choice for someone looking for a softer, more delicate touch. Choose two types of flowers in varying sizes for a visually impressive arrangement. As artificial flowers come in shapes and shades not necessarily found in nature, you can really get creative with the layout and design.

  • Artificial flowers
  • Glue gun
  • Glue
  • 3D paint or similar

After they’ve had their fill of floral fun, Diana Wrenn, Associate Designer at Fruit Bouquets guided the children through a presentation all about Fruit Bouquets! After their sweet fruit seminar, the children continued to channel their creativity with a fun floral arranging class at our own 1-800-Flowers.com Carle Place retail store! After they created their own floral arrangements, the fun didn’t stop there! The group was then joined by Jessica Banker, Manager of Interactive Marketing from the Great Food Brands, to give them an overview of our Great Foods portfolio while separating the children into groups to prepare for their planned group project.

At this point, the children certainly earned their lunch! They were treated to a pizza lunch joined by their parents where they could share their experiences from the first part of the day.

Once lunch was over, the children were treated to a tour around the office where they could catch a glimpse at how their parents work. The children then took part in a fun and relaxing activity to finish up the day; with help from Fine Stationery, they had the opportunity to make their own personalized cards. They were then picked up to be taken home by their parents, where they were anxious to share all of the fun things they had learned and experienced from the day!

How to Feng Shui Your Office Space

With neverending job responsibilities and continuously growing office hours, it’s important to have a space that helps keep you focused, calm and collected. While you may not have too much say on the general atmosphere of your office, you do have the authority to decorate in (almost) any way you please; so take advantage and give your work desk a feng shui makeover with these simple ideas!

Tips for Optimizing Your Work Space

Add an air-purifying plant. Bonsai and Aloe plants are among the dozens of varieties that can help rid your air of toxins and bacteria. If you’re looking for an alternative with slightly more color, try a gerber daisy plant! Even If you’re known for your inability to care for plants, there’s an option for you – the trendy, yet low maintenance cactus plant!

De-clutter. Once a month or bi-weekly if possible, take an hour out of your day to re-organize and de-clutter your work space. Toss papers that have piled up or simply change out some of your decorations for a fresh new touch.

Treat yourself to a monthly flower arrangement. Add a touch of color and liveliness to your work space with a fresh flower arrangement! A bouquet of sunflowers is the perfect way to add a touch of cheer, while stunning roses are sure to give your space a touch of elegance. When choosing your flowers, be considerate of your co-workers and any allergies they may have.

If you’re “walled-in”, hang a soothing/inspiring picture. There’s nothing more dreary than staring at a wall for eight hours a day. Give your eyes a relaxing image to rest on or an inspiration to quote to help stir up your creativity and help keep you going.

Keep chords organized. There’s nothing more jarring to your sense of focus than a cluttered bundle of chords in your peripheral vision. Take some time to organize your chords, then use ribbon or twist ties to keep them in a nice, neat bundle.
