How to Paint Flowers on Wine Glasses

DIY: How to Paint Flowers on Wine Glasses

Whether you’re making these wine glasses with friends, for a friend, or for yourself, you are sure to have fun letting your creative side come out!

Add a personalized touch to ordinary wine glasses by painting flowers on them to make them extraordinary. Not only are these hand-painted wine glasses easy to make, but they’re pretty inexpensive too, which makes them great gifts if you’re on a tight budget.

Choose the flowers and colors of your choice to make them extra special for birthdays, holidays, or just because. Now, roll up your sleeves because we’re about to dive into Flower Wine Glass Painting 101!

Supplies

  • Enamel paint (Make sure it is specifically for glass products!)
  • Variety of paintbrushes
  • Clear wine glasses (washed and dried)
  • Cup of water (for cleaning your brushes)
  • Paint palette or paper plate
  • Paper towels, napkins, or rissues

Directions

Step 1: Get inspired with real flowers

Before starting, think about which flowers you would like to paint on your wine glass. You can use flowers from outside, browse flowers online, or get some stems from your local florist. I was inspired by beautiful yellow sunflowers and lavender daisies.

Step 2: Create your work station

Now that you’ve decided what flower(s) you want to use, select paint colors to match. You can get whatever colors you like, but the primary colors are essential for mixing, while black and white are important for lightening and darkening. As mentioned above, make sure your paint is glass-product friendly. If you are unsure, ask a sales associate at your local craft shop.

Step 3: Organize your paint

Pour a small amount of each color onto your paint palette. (Hint: A paper plate works just as well.) Make sure to have colors for the flower petals, center, and stem. It’s also a good idea to add white and black in case you want to lighten or darken your colors. Once you’ve created your color palette, set your wine glass upside down onto a paper towel (napkins or newspapers are fine, too) to keep paint from getting onto your work surface. You will also want to keep paper towels handy to wipe off your paint brush as needed after dipping it in water or paint.

Step 4: Paint the center of your flower

Select the color you will use as the center of your flower. Feel free to mix colors to get the shade you want. We mixed red and purple to get the perfect shade of brown for the center of our sunflower, but brown paint will work just as well.

Using a small pointed brush, make tiny dots where the stem meets the bowl of the glass. Make the dots as big or small as you want to represent the flower you’re creating.

Different flowers will have different centers. For example, I added more dots to my sunflower glass than the daisy glass since sunflowers have very large centers.

Step 5: Add the flower petals

Once the dotted center has dried (feel it gently with your finger tips to make sure), you can start painting your flower petals. You can paint the petals completely over the dotted center, halfway over, or not at all.

For the sunflower, I painted shorter, wider yellow/orange petals. For the purple daisies, I painted longer, thinner petals.

Feel free to overlap petals or add streaks for a cool color accent. While you’re painting the petals, keep in mind what the glass will look like from the inside.

Step 6: Add a green stem

Using your favorite shade(s) of green, paint the stem of the wine glass for your flower stem. Most flowers have green petal-like “leaves” underneath, so you will want to cover the “bowl” of the glass with that. Let the leaves cover the ends of some of your flower petals as well.

Step 7: Add leaves to the wine glass base

Carefully flip the glass right-side up and paint the base of the glass with leaves or decoration of your choice. This is also a great place to add a name or short message for an extra personal touch.

Step 8: Let your wine glass dry

The enamel paint should dry pretty quickly, but make sure to give it a few hours before you start using the glass.

Step 9: Pour yourself a drink!

Nice job and congratulations on creating a beautiful wine glass. Now it’s time to toast to your masterpiece! If it’s a gift, wrap it up with a bottle of wine or bouquet of flowers that matches your wine glass flower design.

What Is Singles’ Day?

Singles’ Day began at Nanjing University in China in 1993 and has since spread throughout that country and beyond. It was created to help stop the negative connotation surrounding the idea of being single, especially in universities. Initially called “Bachelor’s Day,” since it started out being celebrated by only young men, the holiday is celebrated by both men and women today.

Singles’ Day is celebrated on Nov. 11 (11/11) because of the four single “ones” in the date. The Chinese name of the holiday, “Guanggun Jie,” appropriately translates to “bare sticks holiday.”

4 ways to celebrate Singles’ Day

Singles’ Day is celebrated with fun, uplifting activities to enjoy the fun of being single. Check out some ideas below.

1. Spend a night on the town dancing and singing karaoke

singles Day with Singing Karaoke

Is there a better way to meet new people and enjoy the single life than singing your heart out and dancing the night away? (We’ll wait here while you think of an answer.) Right, we couldn’t think of any either, which is why Singles’ Day often involves parties and karaoke.

2. Attend a blind date party

Another fun Singles’ Day party idea are “blind date” parties. Even though the occasion is celebrating your single self, the holiday is often used as an excuse to meet new people and find a potential partner. Blind date parties are popular as a way to meet new people and potentially say goodbye to single life.

3. Buy a gift for yourself

What better way to show self appreciation than buying a gift for yourself?! In addition to partying in honor of the single life, it is also traditional to buy yourself something to show how much you love YOU! With that said, retail stores (both online and offline) have Singles’ Day deals and steals.

In addition to being a holiday to buy gifts for yourself, Singles’ Day also has become a big shopping day for singles to buy gifts for their new potential suitors, and for couples to express how thankful they are for their special “one.”

Popular gifts for Singles’ Day include everything from perfume and clothing, to flowers and cookies, and more of your (or their) favorite things!

In recent years, Singles’ Day sales in China have outgrown Black Friday AND Cyber Monday sales in the U.S., and has become the world’s largest online shopping day.

4. Eat the signature treat of Singles’ Day

If you’re someone who always has food on the brain, then Singles’ Day has something for you. “Youtiao,” or deep-fried dough sticks, are the unofficial food of Singles’ Day. Similar to the doughnuts we have in the United States, youtiao are traditionally served in fours to represent the four ones in “11/11.”

Rare “Corpse Flower” Set to Bloom at the New York Botanical Gardens

BRONX, NEW YORK − While we normally think of flowers as sweet-smelling, there are also flowers that are on the complete opposite spectrum such “armorphophallus titanum,” also known as a “corpse flower.” The corpse flower received its named because of its unpleasant (to put it nicely 🙂 scent. Many describe the corpse flower smell to “rotting flesh” or a “decaying carcass.”

While this flower doesn’t sound very pleasant, it is very popular because of its rarity and because of the time it takes to bloom. It has been nearly 80 years since the corpse flower last bloomed at the New York Botanical Gardens. Given the long wait, the flower may only last for just one or two days.

While relatively unpredictable, the New York Botanical Garden’s corpse flower is said to be only “seconds away from blooming.” For those that don’t want to brave the stench or are not in the area, the flower is being live-streamed on the NYBG website. This giant flower can grow to be 8 feet high and opens up to a red interior when in bloom. The odor is said to attract pollinators, such as flies, which love the rotting odor as a place to lay their eggs.

So, will you be watching the corpse flower cam to see it bloom?

Popular Purple Wedding Flowers for Your Special Day

purple wedding flowers with purple wedding centerpiece

In honor of wedding season, we asked our florists about one of the most searched-for wedding flower colors: purple. It’s no surprise why purple wedding flowers are the most popular color: They work great for vineyard weddings, pair well with both blues AND pinks, and come in lots of pretty shades, from light lavender to deep, dark purple.

According to florists, these are the top wedding flowers.

The best part? All these flowers are available in shades of lavender and purple.

Flower pairings

All these flower types can be paired with fillers, other flowers, or foliage, or left by themselves.
Some good flower combinations for bouquets are:

  • Hydrangeas, roses, and mini calla lilies
  • Roses, mini calla lilies, and stock
  • Dendrobium orchids, roses, and freesia

By adding fillers and foliage to these combinations, you create texture and style. Some good filler pairings include dusty miller, seeded eucalyptus, willow eucalyptus, bulperium, hypericum, silver gray brunia, wax flower, heather, succulents, bear grass, aspidistra leaves, and other types of foliage.

If you’re planning for a special look, use fewer combinations of material to create a more modern feel, such as Phalaenopsis orchids with some foliage or tulips wrapped in aspidistra leaves. Using all mini calla lilies will also convey a modern look.

Flowers for your wedding themes

Rustic wedding flowers

If you’re going for a rustic feel, use willow or seeded eucalyptus, silver brunia, dahlias, roses, scabiosa, and some berries. You can also add burlap, lace, and twine.

Romantic wedding flowers

Gatherings of dusty miller, hydrangeas, roses, spray roses, clematis, and seeded eucalyptus create a romantic look.

Garden wedding flowers

Garden style may contain ivy, herbs, bulperium, penny cress, wax flower, roses, freesia, sweet pea, and lisianthus.

Vintage wedding flowers

Vintage style may contain old broaches, feathers, pearls, roses, mini calla lilies, veronica, lilacs and dusty miller.

Seasonal wedding flowers

While there are many year-round beauties you can use, these seasonal blooms look beautiful in bouquets (and they’re all available in shades of purple!).

Most of these flowers can either be elegant, unique, or rustic, depending on what you pair them with and the style you choose.

How to Make Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Chocolate covered strawberries are a delicious treat, but did you know they’re also super simple to make? We visited our floral (and fruit) studio to watch them being made and couldn’t help but share how good they look. While chocolate dipped strawberries are great for romantic occasions like anniversaries and Valentine’s Day, I’d like to argue that they’re perfect for any day!

Make the Holidays Sparkle with DIY Glitter Vases

One of the best things about the holiday season is decorating! From Christmas trees to holiday lights to menorahs and more, there are SO many ways to make your home festive and welcoming.

diy-glitter-vases-table

Of course, decorating with holiday flowers is our absolute favorite. I love to add a bit of sparkle during the holidays (especially New Year’s), and these glitter vases are super easy (and fun!) to make. Friendly advice: Try not to throw the glitter everywhere or you’ll spend months cleaning it up. I tell you this based on personal experience (you’re welcome).

Supplies for DIY glitter vases

diy-glitter-vase-supplies
  • Glass vases
  • Glitter (I used red, gold, and white)
  • Ribbon
  • Mod Podge
  • Foam brush
  • Plates
  • Clear spray sealer (optional)
  • Tape or glue

How to make DIY glitter vases

  1. Prepare your work area by putting down paper towels, newspaper, etc., to ensure easy clean-up. Don’t underestimate the ability of glitter to get EVERYWHERE.
  1. Pour a little Mod Podge onto your plate. Take your foam brush and add the Mod Podge to the bottom of the vase (or wherever you want to add your glitter). Pro tip: Use tape to make a straight line or stripes.
add glitter to mod podge
  1. Hold your vase over another plate and sprinkle the glitter all over the Mod Podge. Excess glitter will fall onto the plate.
  1. Once the Mod Podge/glitter has dried, put another layer of Mod Podge over the glitter or use a clear spray sealer.
  1. Glue or tape a ribbon where the glitter ends to give it a smooth line and make it a bit more festive.
  1. Add water and flowers, and display in your home. How easy was that?!
