Through personal stories and uplifting videos, we’re here to guide you to a peaceful, pleasant mindset.

Creativity can be used to express a range of emotions, and after suffering a traumatic brain injury, it’s what artist Kristina Libby relied on to get herself through tough times. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Kristina used her imagination to bring comfort to the public in the form of floral heart arrangements. We were fortunate enough to catch up with her and discuss the inspiration behind her selfless project she shared with the world.

Kristina Libby Headshot

What started your artistic career?

I’ve always been interested in art and florals. I was even a florist when I was in my early 20s. However, it wasn’t until after a traumatic brain injury from a kite-surfing accident last year that I found my way back to art. First, I started painting because it helped to soothe my constant headaches. Then, when the pandemic hit, I felt like I couldn’t just stay in my studio. I wanted to make and create public art and that really inspired me to start creating floral hearts.

Did you start making your floral heart designs at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic?

No. When the pandemic hit NYC, I was rushing back from a trip in Africa. I made one of the very last flights out of Rwanda and just snuck into South Africa before it shut down its borders and then flew to the U.S. So, when I first landed I was just in a total daze. As I watched the news and began to feel the enormity of what was happening, I felt so heartbroken. Thousands of people were dying without funerals and their families were left without the traditional grieving practices.  I became really worried about what we were doing to help the dead and dying. So, I  co-founded COVID Tech Connect with four other women, a non-profit that helps put tablets into the hospital rooms of patients who are dying from COVID. The tablets allowed people to use Zoom and FaceTime and that started to give people a chance to say goodbye to each other and watch over those who were dying.

Many families have been unable to go through traditional grieving practices during the pandemic.

Is this what inspired the creation of your floral hearts?

Yes. I was heartbroken watching what was happening in my home city and in cities across America. The number of people dying was astounding but, so too was my worry about how this would impact the fabric of our nation. There is a term called “disenfranchised grief” which is the idea that people who put off grieving — generally due to war or other high-stress situation — end up with lingering and endemic PTSD symptoms. This includes violence, depression, and anxiety. I wondered if putting off grieving as a nation meant that we would have these symptoms in the fabric of our culture long after the pandemic had stopped. So, I wanted to do something to visualize my grief and allow others to access their grief; to feel connected to the city and to have a moment of comfort.

Why did you choose to work with flowers?

Floral Heart in NYC

Naturally, I drifted towards floral art — something I was comfortable with — and it felt right for this moment. Flowers are already dead but historically are used in moments of sadness to provide sympathy and support. The first floral piece I made was about re-imagining the six feet social distance messaging. I was terrified to put it in public. But, it was well-received and inspired others who saw it and interacted with it. Plus, I think we were all craving surprise, color, and compassion in that moment.

The second piece was a floral heart and it really started as an act of blessing and sympathy for the city.

You said your floral hearts acted as a blessing. How so?

There are a lot of traditions that use floral garlands or flowers to bless those around them, wish them well on a trip, or send them off into the afterlife. The interesting thing about flowers is that they really can do all of those things at once. So, I made a floral heart as a blessing and put it into the East River. People reached out to me from all over when they saw the image. They found it to be touching and meaningful. So, I wanted to do more of that and help more people. From there, I laid a floral heart on the Brooklyn Bridge and the whole project took off after that.

What is the aim of your floral hearts project?

Floral Heart with Fountain

For now, I want to make 50 floral hearts in recognition of those we have lost. But, ultimately I want them to grow into a future piece that will allow us a moment of recognition for the pandemic deaths along with  a moment of reflection. I’m thrilled to partner with 1-800-Flowers to make floral hearts for the next few months because it allows us to write a love letter to NYC, in a way. These flowers will be in sympathy and love with those who have passed away, and they’ll also spread warmth to those that are living and allow their struggling to feel seen.

What do you hope your floral hearts project inspires in others?

I would love to see copycats of these floral hearts around NYC and around the world. Nearly anyone with any kind of flowers can make a floral heart garland. Making it is cathartic; laying it in a public place is cathartic; and, ultimately watching others interact with it also makes you feel good, too. If we can do nothing more right now, maybe we can blanket the world in flowers.

Then, record their answers in a memory journal. Below are 15 questions to get you started.

3 Tips for Practicing Meditation

The practice of meditation can fuel positivity, improve focus, and reduce stress. Each week at 1-800-Flowers.com, our meditation instructor, Lindsey Gaterman, has been hosting virtual classes for employees to help them relax. So far, the results have been nothing but positive. Below are meditation tips from Lindsey that we’d like to share with you. Through repetition and practice, these exercises can become a habit you can make a part of your everyday life.

meditation with Lindsey Gaterman

3 meditation tips for beginners

1. Dedicate a special space for your meditation practice

It’s helpful if this space is away from a computer where you usually work and is somewhere that feels safe and peaceful. A cushion is helpful but not essential to get started. Seeing this space serves as a reminder to practice, and it can help one set aside other activities to be fully present during the practice.

2. Set a compassionate intention before you practice

It’s likely the mind will wander during meditation. That’s OK! When this happens, it’s helpful to have a compassionate reminder as to why one started the meditation in the first place. A good example is “Learn to love and appreciate myself.”

3. Practicing often can be more beneficial than sitting for long periods of time

A good plan for beginners: Meditate every other day for three to five minutes. Once it feels comfortable, add minutes or days to this plan after some time. Coming to the cushion five days a week and practicing for 10 minutes each time can be more valuable than coming to the cushion once a week and meditating for an hour. It’s not about what you do on the cushion as much as it’s about why you are coming to it and the insight you take with you.

4 general mindfulness tips

Purple Orchid

1. Feel the breath and be with the body

The breath is one of the few constant and consistent things we have in life. It is a lovely tool that allows us to come into the present moment, even if only for a second. Often, with presence, there is peace.

2. Send compassionate wishes to yourself and others

Wishing ourselves and others well can help one drop out of the mind and into the heart, both during meditation and outside it. Wishes of loving kindness are a great place to start, and they go like this: May you be happy. May you be healthy. May you live with ease. May you be safe.

3. Be wary of phone and general screen time

When we’re on screens, we’re often operating on autopilot. Decreasing screen time can help with sleep, focus, and overall present-ness.

4. Take walks without destinations or spend time in nature

Spending time in nature comes with many benefits, including reduced stress levels, improving short-term memory, strengthening your immune system, and increasing happiness.

I actually grew up around flowers (my father was an avid gardener), and I’ve had a deep love for them ever since. As a designer, flowers have come to play a significant role in my Ready-to-Wear collections and have been prominently featured in my shows, including many provided by 1-800-Flowers. How did this collaboration come about?

Since our start, it has been my dream to secure a consistent nationwide floral supply that both supports our business owner’s growth and allows us to provide our customers with a best-in-class experience. So, I reached out to 1-800-Flowers.com CEO, Chris McCann, to explore the opportunity of collaboration. Chris welcomed the conversation and has been such a pleasure to work with. Seven months later, here we are! We are so excited to be working with the 1-800-Flowers.com team on this workshop collaboration, and if you know me at all, you know that I always have the next thing up my sleeve!

Can you tell us a little about your collections and what we can expect in the next few months?

Each season we release a new floral recipe collection featuring seasonally-inspired color palettes and florals. This year our collections have been inspired by some of my favorite international trips and the rich culture of each location. Our current collection, Summer In Mexico, features bright and bold florals with a tropical flair – an all-time favorite of mine!

In August, we will be launching our Fall collection. While I can’t let you in on the collection theme just yet, it will feature a much richer and moodier color palette, with completely new textures and aesthetics.

Amazing! How can readers join an upcoming workshop?

You can sign up for an upcoming virtual or in-person event here! Workshops are selling out fast, so I recommend signing up soon – you can never have too many flowers or girl’s nights in your life, right?

Staying Busy & Connected, Petal Talk Chats with Norma

We were first introduced to Norma Gregorio when she received one of our birthday flower cakes from her family for her 88th birthday. Since they couldn’t be together in person during this time to celebrate, she sent them a video which made it’s way to Good Morning America.

We were so taken by this story, and Norma’s positive outlook on life that we wanted to chat more with her about how she is staying connected during this time. Thank you Norma for taking the time to share your story.

“L’avventura e’ dentro di noi” means “Adventure is within us”

“I’m often asked, “Aren’t you lonely living alone? Don’t you get bored? What do you do all day long?” And that’s when I am in a quandary because I have no good answers. I’m never bored. I’m never lonely. I’m always looking forward to tomorrow. Doing or planning something special or something different. Right now, I am looking forward to driving down to the shore in my son’s convertible, on a beautiful day with the top down. Just feeling the sunlight and the warm breeze on my face makes me appreciate the beauty of this world.

I just finished my crochet doily and my flower needle point. Now I’ll have to get myself another pretty needlepoint canvas. I do it because I find it relaxing and rewarding. It is just like life; we all start with a blank canvas and we all create our beautiful lives as the years pass. I also enjoy cooking, doing English and Italian crossword puzzles, reading and writing. I’ve written several books, but no one seem to want to publish them. But that does not stop me, no, I just keep on writing. I just finished writing a new story for a children’s picture book.

Now, we have this virus cloud over us all. I do not allow it to enter into my everyday life. Even though I have been self-quarantined since the beginning of March, it will not change the feelings and the love I have for my family and friends nor will it surround me with a sense of fear. I call everybody on Skype and WhatsApp every week, both here and in Italy, and we talk and talk and talk. Conversation is the best medicine; it brings joy to your life and you touch the heart of the person you are talking to.

I know that when this pandemic is over, all humanity will be scarred, some more than others, emotionally, financially or physically.

We are all strong, with our love and hope for one another, we will all be winners.”

Heartwarming Connections: Celebrating, Near or Far

Social distancing and quarantining has made it challenging for families to celebrate holidays together. However, Ashley’s mom made sure to show her daughter and granddaughter they can still celebrate Easter with a heartwarming surprise! We are so happy to be a part of helping deliver smiles to Ashley and Hayley!

“Social isolation can be hard. We have been cooped up and I haven’t seen my mom in weeks (who we usually see multiple times a week). We have FaceTime (thank goodness) to get us by, and my mom will bake dinners that Kyle will pick up on his way home (in still practicing the way of social distancing), but today we got a big surprise from my mama/Haley’s vava that brightened both our day. Look how cute these flowers are! We love you so much mama! Can’t wait for the world to be normal again.”

How to Stay Connected with the Seniors in Your Life

An Interview with Senior Blog Writer
& Floral Expert Jerry Rosalia

Jerry Rosalia

At 88-years-young, our Blog Writer & Floral Expert, Jerry Rosalia, is the kind of guy who looks at the glass half-full. During this time of social distancing, Jerry has been finding ways to stay safely connected with family and friends (including fellow seniors), as well as finding valuable ways to spend his time. With Jerry’s positive outlook on life, we decided to ask him for helpful tips that may be useful to fellow seniors, or family and friends of seniors who are looking to reach out.

What’s the best way to spend your time while quarantined?

Get your gloves, mask, walking shoes, and weather permitting, and take a walk! The sun and its vitamin D is anti-viral. And if none of it works, we all need the exercise!

How are you staying connected with family and friends?

My family meets twice a week on Zoom (which is very much like FaceTime).  We “meet” with the entire family with everyone from Long Island, New York, to my great grandchildren whose daddy is a Marine in California. It was the first time the group got together when we weren’t eating.

Is there anything you wish friends and family were doing that they are not?

We seniors have friends who are ill, live alone, etc. So, make their day and give them a call. You will hear a smile in their voices. In a day or so, you may even get a call back.

Heartwarming Connections: Love Knows No Distance

What we are experiencing right now with social distancing is only a fraction of what military families go through with their loved ones. Although COVID-19 extended Jake’s deployment, he made sure his wife, Shannon, still felt special on her birthday. Jake, we thank you for continued service and hope you can be reunited with your family soon!

“Yet another birthday that @jake.stockman is gone 🙁 I’ve lost count on how many this is now. He should be getting ready to come home right now but thanks to Covid-19 his deployment was extended. And unlike times in the past, this time there’s no end in sight which makes it so much worse! So Thank you my Love, for trying to make this birthday as special as you could. And thank you @1800flowers for still being open in this current crazy mess of a world.”
