How to Host an Ugly Sweater Party

December brings a crush of invitations to swanky or stuffy holiday parties with Champagne and carols. Sure, the free drinks and passed hors d’oeuvres are nice, and maybe you’ll win a prize in the annual raffle, but for the most part, these affairs are dull.

The solution to your holiday party doldrums? An ugly sweater party!

As tried and true a tradition as the stiff corporate holiday gathering, the ugly sweater party embraces the joy of good old-fashioned (or bad-fashioned) fun with friends and family. “An ugly sweater party is intended to be casual and playful, so the focus should be on having a good time,” says Amy Zediana Dearth, CSEP (that’s Certified Special Events Professional for the uninitiated), president of Consider It Done Special Events in Boston.

Use this guide to get you set on the right track for hosting an ugly sweater party to remember this year.

Invite them in style

Set yourself up for a fun night before your guests arrive. “Creative invitations are a way to set the tone of the event at the very first possible moment,” Dearth says. “While some people may simply send an electronic invitation, getting a touch creative can really make a difference.”

Of course, she notes, the size of your guest list will determine how creative you can get. If you’re having a smaller gathering, consider dressing up in your finest ugly sweater and personally delivering an invitation to each guest.

For a larger get-together, you can send personalized ugly sweater invitations in the mail. “Making that moment memorable will entice your guests to want to attend,” Dearth says.

Food with a theme

No party — cute sweaters or otherwise — is complete without the right snack spread. The key to a party menu that appeals to everyone is to mix and match sweet, savory, and spicy options. And when you’re throwing an ugly sweater party, keep the theme in mind when serving traditional party foods.

Dearth suggests incorporating aspects of an ugly sweater into the party menu. “For example, if you’d like to offer beef skewers as an appetizer, instead of bamboo sticks, perhaps you can use knitting needles,” she says. “If you are building a buffet, fill empty vases with holiday ornaments and balls of yarn.”

ugly sweater party with reindeer-shaped burgers

For something savory, lay out an elegant charcuterie board so guests can help themselves to sausages, briny pickles, and tasty spreads. Decorate the table around the board with tinsel, holly, and mistletoe to stay on theme.

To add some spice to your party, offer a selection of relishes with crackers or crudité for dunking. Or, for a snack that satisfies nearly every taste bud, you can’t go wrong with a giant tin of popcorn. Opt for one with traditional flavors, such as butter, caramel, cheese, and white cheddar, or go the seasonal route, with varieties such as Snowflake Sugar Cookie or Holiday Cookie Dough. Some tins even come in a festive plaid motif that is reminiscent of an ugly sweater design (unless you still think plaid sweaters are in style).

And, of course, because it’s the holidays, you have to end the night with something sweet. A holiday cookie basket provides your hideously dressed guests with an assortment of festively frosted, sugared, and sprinkled baked treats. Plus, the basket makes for a decorative presentation that’s perfect for the occasion.

Drink up

Great drinks are just as important as tasty food at your ugly sweater party. To keep everyone happy, offer a selection of both adult beverages and alcohol-free options.

Cozy holiday parties call for warm-me-up sips, such as mulled wine (which will also make your house smell wonderful) and pear martinis. If you’re feeling especially festive, pop open a bottle or two of sparkling wine to set the mood.

And don’t leave your bottles of wine out in the cold! Keep the theme going right through to the drink table by dressing them up in an adorable ugly sweater and matching hat. They’re just the right size for your favorite 750-milliliter bottle, regardless of whether you prefer red or white.

Capture the moment

Since your party is all about showcasing the wildest looking sweaters all night long, Dearth recommends having cameras at the ready for the inevitable photo ops.

She also suggests setting up a backdrop, or several, around the party for guests to pose in front of. “Because the sweaters are the focus, try for a more neutral backdrop,” she advises. Set out a few instant cameras so guests can take their pics home as a party favor.

For additional decorations, Dearth says to always return to the theme. Turn your living room into a cozy ugly sweater itself with decorative touches, such as colorful yarn, festive and kitschy holiday accents, pom-poms, and glitter.

Keep ’em laughing

ugly sweater party with people having fun

The biggest mistake hosts make when throwing any kind of party, Dearth says, is forgetting about the fun. To avoid that pitfall, you need to fully embrace the lighthearted nature of an ugly sweater party. “Plan some high-energy, exciting forms of entertainment,” Dearth recommends. “Because an ugly sweater party is meant to be silly, focus on games that are silly!”

Break out old school board games, such as Twister and Sorry. If your party is adults only, arrange an interactive drinking game that incorporates charades or picture drawing. Or, get Bad Christmas Movie Bingo, which combines watching a holiday movie (any one of your choosing will do…the worse, the better) and, well, playing Bingo, of course.

At the end of the night, close things out with a group vote for the ugliest sweater. The winner can take home bragging rights and a festive prize — like, say, a set of Star Wars ugly sweater stemless drinking glasses.

How to Make a DIY Christmas Centerpiece

christmas centerpiece ideas with christmas centerpiece floral craft

When Christmastime comes around, it’s easy to get into the holiday spirit. From Christmas decorations to the gleeful melodies of Christmas music and carols to the festive holiday foods, there’s so much to love about the season.

And to make your Christmas even more special, we’ve created an easy-to-follow guide to making your very own floral DIY Christmas centerpiece in just a few easy steps. Your handmade Christmas centerpiece will not only impress guests but will look amazing next to Christmas dinner!

Before you start, we should point out that you can make the centerpiece without the flowers first to make it last longer. Then, when Christmas nears, add the flowers a day or two before to have your floral centerpiece extra fresh for the holiday!

Materials for DIY Christmas centerpiece

  • Floral tray (We used a round floral tray, but you can use anything that mimics that shape…even a round soup bowl!)
  • Floral foam
  • Water
  • Tapered candle (We used a 15-inch red candle.)
  • Knife or clippers
  • Floral wires
  • Floral sticks
  • Millimeter balls clusters
  • Pine cones
  • Holiday greens (We used cedar, variegated holly, balsam, white pine, and sugar pine. You may be able to find some of these on nearby trees.)
  • Flowers (We used white cushion pom poms and red mini carnations.)

Instructions for DIY Christmas centerpiece

  1. Cut the floral foam to fit the shape of your tray.
  2. Set the cut piece of foam in water for about five minutes, until it is completely saturated. If your floral foam has holes, which is actually preferred, place the foam in the water holes side down. The trick is to let the foam sink to the bottom, to allow it to absorb the most water possible.
Christmas centerpiece ideas with floral foam in water
  1. Place the soaked foam snugly into your floral tray.
  2. Add the candle to the center of the foam. You can use a candleholder or not.
Christmas centerpiece ideas with adding greens to foam
  1. Now, add your greens to the floral foam. A helpful tip: Look at the centerpiece as an extension of the table. Start low so the greens just about hit the table, and then work your way up to build the arrangement. With how long the needles of the white pine (aka sugar pine) are, we thought this was a good green to start with. After filling the base with sugar pine, we added the rest of the greens: balsam, cedar, and then variegated holly.
Christmas centerpiece ideas with adding pine cones and millimeter balls
  1. Next, add the pine cones and millimeter balls. So these elements can stand out in the arrangement, place them on sticks, securing them with wire. Do this by wrapping the wire around the pine cone and then wrapping the same wire around a stick, until the pine cone is secure. Then, do the same with the millimeter balls. (In all, we created six pine cones and six millimeter ball clusters on sticks.) Add the pine cones and millimeter balls on sticks to the arrangement, making sure you spread them out to achieve a good balance.
Christmas centerpiece ideas with placing flowers
  1. Now it’s time to add the flowers. Do this in whatever order you prefer. We started with the white cushion pom poms and then added red mini carnations, making sure to create a nice balance of red and white alongside the greens for an extra festive look.
  2. Inspect your centerpiece for any “bald” spots or areas that are lacking. Add your leftover greens, flowers, or decorations as you see fit to fill these empty spaces and create the fullest centerpiece possible.
  3. Once you’re happy with your Christmas centerpiece, place it on the table and admire it!

Very Merry Modern Christmas Centerpiece

Here’s another Christmas centerpiece idea. It’s called the Very Merry Modern Christmas Centerpiece, and it uses noble fir, cedar, and white pine for greenery; green hydrangea, and red and white spray roses for flowers; and pine cones, hypericum, and ornaments for accents. The materials are pretty much the same as above, only instead of a long tapered candle, it features a glass cube vase in the middle with a tea light candle or flameless candle inside.

How to Make a DIY Christmas Stocking to Add Holiday Cheer to Your Home

When I was asked to write an article about making DIY Christmas stockings, the first thing I did was to go to my favorite fabric store and head straight for the clearance remnant table.

diy christmas stocking with fabric remnants

I picked up the holiday color “trinity” — red, white, and green — as well as various prints and florals that just spoke to me. I knew I wanted to show how to make a basic Christmas stocking, but I also wanted to inspire creativity, to make you, the reader, go beyond what’s expected and design a stocking that matches your own personal style.

I started with a basic red stocking with white cuff. I am not a sewer and do not own a sewing machine, so I decided to make the stocking using glue — both hot glue and fabric glue. Easier said than done! Here’s how it went.

Making a basic Christmas stocking

DIY Christmas stocking with hemmed cuff

Using an old Christmas stocking, I created a stocking template that you can download here. This stocking measures 7 inches wide at the top and 14 to 16 inches high. Don’t feel like your stocking has to be these same dimensions — make your stocking any size you want!

  1. Trace the stocking template onto your fabric.
  2. Use a sharp scissors to cut out the stocking. You will need two pieces of fabric. Before cutting, fold the fabric so that you can cut both pieces at the same time.
  3. After cutting the two stocking pieces, place them right side together.
  4. Sew or glue the edges together, except for the top, with about a quarter-inch seam.
  5. Cut the material you are using for the cuff. The length should be two times the width of the stocking at the top plus another 1 1/2 inches. The height should be between 3 and 4 inches. If you are using a material that will need to be hemmed, add an additional quarter inch on the top and bottom.
  6. Hem the cuff, if necessary. Glue or sew the cuff with the right side against the wrong side of the stocking along the top edge only. Remember, your stocking is inside out at this point.
  7. Turn the stocking right side out and roll the cuff down.
DIY Christmas stocking finished

This is your basic stocking. However, I felt it was a bit plain looking, so I used a buffalo plaid wired ribbon to add some personality to it.

Embellishing a basic Christmas stocking

DIY Christmas stocking with name on it

To make a ruffled edge, simply hold the end of one of the wires and keep sliding the ribbon down the wire on that one side. Keep doing this until you have the length of ribbon you need.

I attached the ruffled ribbon all along the edge of the stocking using a glue gun. I also made the loop for hanging from the same ribbon.

At this point, I thought it needed a little more personalization, so I added a name on the cuff. If you want to create your own custom stocking but don’t have the time, you can always order one online.

While making this stocking using only glue was fairly simple, I decided that sewing the stockings would be faster and easier, and make them more secure and functional. However, as I said before, I am not a sewer, so I called my good friend, Ann, who is a master quilter, for assistance. She was happy to help, and it turned out to be a great afternoon of holiday crafting and spending time together.

Making a mini Christmas stocking

We decided to do two stocking sizes: a traditional size and some minis that would be great for gift cards.

DIY Christmas stocking template

DIY Christmas stocking with cutting out shape

No matter the size you choose, you still need to start with a template. I used a credit card/gift card as a guide and drew the finished size that I wanted the mini stocking to be. Next, I created the final template that is a quarter inch larger all around to allow for the seams. Then, I followed the same steps as above.

Place the template on two pieces of fabric and cut both pieces at the same time.

diy christmas stocking with white stockings with black and white buffalo plaid ribbon cuffs

How adorable are these? We went all out on the buffalo plaid, making both red stockings with red and black ribbon cuffs, and white stockings with the black and white buffalo plaid ribbon cuffs. For both versions, we used the same ribbon for the loops.

I will definitely incorporate these mini stocking gift card holders into my wrapping plans this and every year!

More DIY Christmas stocking design ideas

Next, I laid out all the beautiful fabric remnants I bought and had fun putting these fabulous combinations together. Holiday stockings are just one more way to customize your holiday decorating or gift giving. Who said stockings need to be traditional? Why not have them match your style, maybe even using the same fabric as your pillows or curtains?

DIY Christmas stocking hanging from mantle

This stocking would be perfect as a gift bag for my quilting friend, Ann. I love the layering we did using both fabric and ribbon for the cuff.

DIY Christmas stocking modern looking

This version is so pretty and modern looking. Adding the burlap and lace ribbon trim on the cuff adds just a touch of rustic to an otherwise elegant stocking.

DIY Christmas stocking with magnolia leaves

How great does it look on a front door brimming with magnolia leaves?

DIY Christmas stocking with materials

There’s something about all the texture in this combo that just did it for me! Again, it’s all in the details. Braiding the green yarn before gluing it to ribbon edging just brings it to the next level.

Ann and I had so much fun creating these beautiful stockings, and we hope they inspire you to try making some of your own.

I found the right combination for a detailed and structurally sturdy stocking was sewing the main portion and gluing the details. Find the method that’s right for you and remember — just have fun with it!

Some of the best and most thoughtful gifts are those that don’t cost while still bringing the holiday cheer (and maybe a little chocolate, too).

Should you want a jazzier one, there’s the Fruitcake Confection, which has been described as less of a cake and more of a chewy, gooey mix of nuts and large and delicious dried fruit held together by dough and then glazed to a gleaming, shiny perfection. We’re not sure who described it that way, but if you miss out on trying this, the joke’s on you.

Top 12 Trending Christmas Flowers & Wreaths

The holidays, with all their cocoa and cookies and sparkly lights, are upon us once again. And with them comes a chance for people to reconnect over time-cherished traditions and experience the joy of decking the halls with their favorite heirlooms and seasonal florals. “Christmas is the peak of home entertaining season,” says Valerie Ghitelman, VP of product development, design & sourcing, consumer florals & gifts, for 1-800-Flowers.com. “Our homes are our sanctuary, and people are enhancing their sanctuary with beautiful flowers and plants.”

Ghitelman says she has seen a change in the types of flowers and wreaths that are trending for Christmas. “People are looking for shorter, more compact arrangements and distinct centerpieces that are meant to create a festive environment.” Flowers and greenery that have a longer vase life, such as carnationschrysanthemums, cremones, lilies, and roses, are in vogue, as are monochromatic color schemes.

Moreover, a general sense of nostalgia is also influencing foliage choices. “We are seeing a return to classic design and traditional, historical colors,” says Ghitelman, who believes this shift is based on people’s emotional desire to connect to the past.

“The demands of family and work can be challenging, and flowers promote physical and emotional well-being, brighten our homes, and create a sense of beauty in our environment,” Ghitelman says.

With that in mind, here are 12 trending Christmas flowers and wreaths for the 2024 holiday season.

24 White Elephant and Secret Santa Gift Ideas

The holidays offer a chance to reconnect with friends and family, and give us an excuse to have a little fun around the office with our co-workers, and one of the most common ways we do this is by giving gifts. But we, as humans, also like playing games, so it only makes sense that we would combine these two passions into one this time of year in the form of holiday gift exchanges. And the two most popular kinds of gift exchanges are White Elephant and Secret Santa. But where did these traditions get started, and what kinds of gifts are appropriate for each?

Here’s a closer look at these holiday classics as well as some inspiration to ensure your gift exchange is a success.

White Elephant gift exchanges

Legend has it that this party gets its name from the passive-aggressive, gift-giving habits of an ancient king of Thailand. Whenever someone left him displeased, he’d “honor” them with the gift of a white elephant. These animals may have been beautiful, but they were useless and expensive to keep. Today’s white elephant parties are a little less mean spirited, but the tradition of gifting something a little “funky” remains.

Make sure you get something that your gift getter will actually like. You might think that a ‘gag gift’ will be really funny, but it might not be.

james cooper

Christmas expert and manager of WhyChristmas.com

james cooper mug

There are many variations on how the game is played, but the general rules remain the same. Each player brings one present, and everyone participates in a game that determines the order in which the gifts are received. This could be as simple as drawing names from a hat or as elaborate as playing bingo or another party game.

When someone’s turn is up, they get to choose a present from the community pile OR decide to steal one from someone else. (It’s up to the game host whether you unwrap presents as you receive them or wait until the end.) Sometimes there’s a limit on how many times a gift can be stolen, while others prefer to facilitate a free-for-all.

White elephant exchanges work best when gifts range from quirky to quality. Ideally, you want multiple people fighting over a few items and lots of laughs over the weirdest presents. But, above all, no one should take the gift exchange too seriously — it’s an opportunity for some lighthearted fun and mischief.

Secret Santa gift exchanges

Secret Santa is the more traditional of the two types of gift exchanges and has been around longer — but in case you haven’t heard of it, we went straight to an authority to explain more about it.

“Secret Santa is a way of anonymously giving gifts,” says James Cooper, Christmas expert and manager of WhyChristmas.com. More specifically, it involves a group of people writing each of their names on a slip of paper and putting them all into a hat (perhaps, even a Santa hat), and then each participant pulling out a name at random. Then, they buy a present for the person whose name they picked without letting the recipient know who it is from.

white elephant gift ideas with secret santa gift

Sometimes, small gifts are distributed in the weeks leading up to Christmas, with the grand finale taking place at a Christmas party. The goal is to be sneaky; you don’t want anyone identifying you as their gift giver until the big reveal.

But despite how common Secret Santa parties are today, no one really knows how the tradition started.

“It might have begun in Sweden with a custom called ‘Julklapp’ (‘Christmas knock’),” Cooper explains. “Several hundred years ago, there was a tradition where you would knock on the door of a friend or neighbor and then leave a small gift (often made from straw or wood) behind on the doorstep. The gift would include a little motto or riddle to help people work out who had left the gift.

“There’s also the legend of Saint Nicholas (the original Santa) giving money anonymously to a poor family by dropping coins into a shoe or stocking,” Cooper continues. “This means that he was literally the first ‘Secret Santa’!”

For those putting on a Secret Santa party, Cooper has some advice.

“Make sure you get something that your gift getter will actually like. You might think that a gag gift will be really funny, but it might not be,” he says. “I also recommend setting a monetary limit, so all the presents are of relatively equal value.”

Office Christmas Decorations: Going to Work Just Got Festive

Office Christmas decorations with tree decorating an office

‘Tis the season to get festive! And since the average person spends about a third of their life at work, why not put a little Christmas cheer into your cubicle? Decorating the office for the holidays is a great way to put a smile on your coworkers’ faces, lighten the mood, and help spread a little joy to everyone around.

If you’re feeling merry this month, here are some ways to add some winter wonder to the workplace with office Christmas decorations.

The lobby

A lobby dressed up for the holidays instantly sets a warm and inviting mood for all its visitors. The size of your building will determine how elaborate you can get with your decor, but what lobby at Christmas time would be complete without a tree and some wreaths?

Although decorating your lobby is an opportunity to let your creativity shine, there are a few rules you should follow when planning your display:

  • Set a budget.
  • Keep in mind that this is a communal space. Ask colleagues for their input.
  • Think about safety first.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute.

Follow these guidelines, and you can be sure that every visitor who stops by these lobby displays will leave happy.

Go big or go home

There’s nothing quite like seeing a big Christmas tree all lit up to stop you in your tracks. The sparkles and trimmings will certainly put you in the holiday spirit as you head into work, and will even draw window shoppers in just to get a look. Hang lights and ornaments from the ceiling for that extra wow factor and seasonal cheer.

The desk or cubicle

Staring at your computer screen for hours can make you feel lackluster during the most wonderful time of year. But have no fear — dressing up your desk with these ideas will have your coworkers thinking that Santa’s elves were working overtime.

Recreate your cozy living room

The holidays are a time for gathering with friends and family, and feeling a sense of comfort at home. Swapping the seating around, adding a cozy rug, and placing wrapped presents under the tree will evoke that feeling of warmth and togetherness from home. You can even set up a hot cocoa bar or fireplace projector screen for an extra level of added comfort.

Bring in a pop of color

Christmas isn’t just about decorating in red and green. In addition to your traditional red poinsettias and green trees, incorporating a pop of color, such as a deep purple ribbon or bright pink bows, will modernize your holiday decor and brighten up your space.

Use what you have

If you already have great pieces in your lobby, add a few small touches to the space to enhance it. Large paper snowflakes, flameless candles, or twigs of holly serve as festive additions that capture the holiday spirit.

Get creative

Now is the time to let your imagination run wild. If you want to see Santa on a sleigh, penguins ice skating, or a reindeer flying through the air covered in falling snow, and, of course, bundles of holiday florals, make it happen! Unique displays are sure to leave a lasting impression and have visitors looking forward to how you can top it next year.

office christmas decorations with Christmas tabletop tree for office

Add a tabletop tree

Placing a small tree on your desk will certainly add some glee — after all, you’ll need a spot for Santa to drop his gifts. It can be real or a feather tree or even gold plated, which can be reused every year. Now that’s thinking green.

Make it sweet

Turn your workspace into a delicious candy land by transforming your desk into a gingerbread house. Cover your desk in brown paper and fill up bowls of peppermints, candy canes, and chocolates to keep there. You’ll be everyone’s favorite coworker as they stop by for a sweet treat.

Wrap it up

Sometimes the simplest decorations are the best. Wrapping your desk and office furniture and dressing it in bows will turn your office space into a colorful present.

Let it snow

Walk into a winter wonderland every day by hanging paper snowflakes, angels, and blankets of glittery snow, or assembling a Christmas village right there on your desk.

Chalk it up

Hang a chalkboard in your cube with a Christmas tree drawn on it. Then, as your coworkers and guests stop by, encourage them to add to the tree and sign their name for the ultimate company Christmas card!

DIY stockings

Looking for a team-building activity to get the whole office in a festive mood? Throw a stocking decorating party! After all the personalization is complete, everyone can display their merry masterpieces in their cubicles.
