6 Easy Recipes for a Labor-free Labor Day

It’s Labor Day, which means you should not spend hours prepping in the kitchen to create an amazing spread for friends and family. The last (“unofficial”) hurrah of the summer deserves celebration and, better yet, to be enjoyed fully with minimal effort in the cooking department and these easy dinner ideas will do just that.

The best way to approach this end-of-the-season get-together is to prepare some quick appetizers, a side dish or two, an easy entrée (the grill is your best friend), and a simple make-ahead or no-bake dessert, all served family style. You do minimal work a day or two ahead of time with these easy dinner ideas and then assemble quickly and serve, leaving more time to mingle with your guests.

Labor-free appetizers

For appetizers, Smoked Salmon Cucumber Bites and Whipped Ricotta and Cherry Crostini are perfect, as they both use in-season ingredients. You can make the cream cheese mixture for the cucumber bites as well as toast the crostini ahead of time — leave the latter at room temperature until you whip the ricotta. Then, quickly assemble them close to the start of the party, and they are on the table for when your guests arrive.

Smoked Salmon Cucumber Bites

Slice an English cucumber into rounds. Combine 4 ounces softened cream cheese, 4 tablespoons Greek yogurt, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, salt to taste, and chopped fresh dill. Spoon a small amount onto each cucumber round and top with smoked salmon. Garnish with fresh dill.

Whipped Ricotta and Cherry Crostini

Toast slices of a baguette. Whip 16 ounces whole milk ricotta, 1 tablespoon of honey, a pinch of salt, and zest of one lemon in a food processor. Spread the whipped ricotta over toasted bread and top with cherry preserves, a drizzle of aged balsamic vinegar, and torn fresh mint leaves. Chop some sweet cherries and put those on top, too. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Labor-free side dish

For side dishes, I went with a very seasonal Tomato and Peach Burrata Salad with Basil Vinaigrette, and Sautéed Corn with Jalapeño, Lime, and Basil. Go ahead and make the vinaigrette up to three days in advance. The corn is amazing cold or at room temperature, so make this the day before and add the basil just before serving to ensure it stays vibrant and fresh.

Tomato Peach Burrata Salad with Basil Vinaigrette

For the vinaigrette, add 2 ½ cups loosely packed basil leaves, 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar, ½ cup olive oil, one clove garlic, a pinch of crushed red pepper, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and a drizzle of honey to a food processor. Blend until smooth. This can be made up to three days in advance and refrigerated.

Slice grape tomatoes in half and slice peaches into wedges. Arrange on a platter and season with salt; then add burrata, basil vinaigrette, and fresh basil leaves.

Corn with Lime, Jalapeño, and Basil

Cut the kernels off eight ears of corn. Add olive oil to a sauté pan and add corn. Sauté 3 minutes, then add kosher salt, 1 tablespoon jalapeño jelly, zest and juice of one lime, and 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar. Sauté another 2 minutes. Stir in finely chopped basil if serving immediately, or reserve and add right before eating if making ahead. Can be served hot or cold.

Labor-free main course

I served these sides with peppercorn-rubbed ribeye steaks grilled to perfection and then sliced so guests can grab them easily, buffet style.

To prepare the meat, season liberally with a peppercorn steak spice on both sides and let it come to room temperature (30 minutes to 1 hour).

Grill on high (450-500° F) for 3 minutes on each side. Then, lower the heat to medium-low and continue cooking to medium rare (until the internal temperature reads 135° F). Feel free cook to your desired doneness. Medium-rare is about 8 minutes of total cooking time, so allow for slightly longer if you prefer a more well-done steak.

Allow the steaks to rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Labor-free dessert

Finish your labor-free Labor Day feast with make-ahead and no-bake Blueberry Lemon Trifles. Serve them in little jars to see all those pretty layers of lemon pound cake, mascarpone cream, lemon curd, blueberry preserves, and, of course, fresh juicy summer blueberries.

Blueberry Lemon Trifles

Slice lemon pound cake into ½-inch squares. In a small bowl, stir together 8 ounces softened mascarpone cream and ½ cup heavy cream until smooth. Layer the jars or small cups with squares of cake, cream, lemon curd, fresh blueberries, more cake, blueberry preserves, and more cream, and finish with fresh blueberries on top.

Round out these easy dinner ideas with some ice cold drinks, a festive playlist, and great company. Here’s to a very happy — and labor-free — Labor Day!

5 Paw-some Tips to Make Your Dog’s Next Birthday Party the Best Yet

dog birthday party with wine

Birthdays come around only once a year. And, just like humans, dogs deserve to have their birthdays acknowledged and celebrated. After all, who doesn’t want another happy occasion to celebrate, and who doesn’t like delicious cake?!

While some people might find celebrating a dog’s birthday strange, believe us when we say, it’s not! Your furry friend is an important part of your family, and he should be treated as such.

Whether you decide to celebrate your dog’s Gotcha Day or birthday, here are five paw-some suggestions to ensure your dog’s next birthday party is his best one yet.

1. Choose a “paw-ty” theme and run with it

Like every good birthday party, your dog’s b-day bash should have a theme. These can range from simple and classy to extravagant and over the top. Ideas include a summer luau bash, carnival party, Hollywood superstars shindig, or even a decade-themed celebration.

The best way to pick a theme is to think about your dog’s personality, as well as the guests you are considering inviting, and select one based on those factors. Regardless of what you opt for, make sure you go all the way with it!

2. Spice up the presentation

When it comes to planning a party, presentation is everything. Based on the theme you settle on for your pooch’s blowout, you can choose how to decorate your space. You can also choose a color scheme and use that for your party supplies, including tableware, balloons, streamers, party favors, and more. Some party supply and pet stores (and, ahem, certain online retailers) even have pet-themed plates, napkins, and banners. If you’re a DIYer, let your creative juices flow and make your own personal banners and signs in honor of your furry friend. And, of course, pet-themed floral arrangements add a splash of color and fun to any space.

3. Set up a doggy photo booth

Lights, camera, action! Nothing says making memories like taking pictures. Setting up a doggy photo booth is the best way to snap some unforgettable moments from your pooch’s special day.

One way to do this is to make your own backdrop, provide some props, and set a custom hashtag for when your guests want to post about your event on social media. You can coordinate this with your party’s theme, or keep things simple and low fuss with a more basic design.

4. Make the human experience just as fun

While the event will be centered on the adorable pups, you have to make sure keep their owners entertained too. That means making sure ALL attendees are well fed and amply hydrated, and have plenty to do.

Whip up some dog-themed party foods, such as like mini hot dogs and sandwiches cut in bone shapes. Of course, you can never go wrong with crackersdips, and veggie platters, or a classic meat and cheese spread. For dessert, dog treats for the canines and cookies for the humans will do the trick — and, what do you know, you can get them both in one convenient package.

Regarding activities, feature pet-themed party games for your guests to play. A limbo contest, musical chairs, and a scavenger hunt are just a few that humans and dogs alike can participate in.

5. Buy your dog a present, or five

What dog birthday is complete without goodies for your furry friends?! Sure, your dog probably has a ton of toys already, but providing him with new things to play with will keep him occupied and happy for hours — and treating your dog to a new present has benefits to you tooSqueaky toys, hats, and bandanas are just a few items that would make the perfect gift for your guest of honor — and, what do you know, you can get all three in one convenient package.

30th Birthday Ideas: The Absolute Best Ways to Ring in the Big 3-0

They say life begins at 30, and for good reason. Reaching this birthday milestone can feel like you’re bidding farewell to a more carefree phase of your life and stepping into true adulthood…which sounds like a cause for celebration!

Past milestone birthdays, such as your 21st, were probably thrown for you. But when you turn 30, you have every right to plan this bash yourself. Far from being a turning point to dread (my youth is gone!), turning 30 ushers in a time to get amped for all the wonderful opportunities life holds now that you’re a little older and, hopefully, a lot wiser. And what better way to welcome such a momentous milestone than with a birthday celebration that’s uniquely you?

The best way to plan a 30th is to ask yourself what you love.

Invites signal a 30th birthday done right

You might be thinking, “Do I really NEED invitations to a birthday party?” In your 20s, life may have been filled with random parties that mostly came together over group texts. But this is your time to feel grown up, so it’s worth the splurge to classy up the experience and set the tone for an affair that’s a tad more formal.

Another reason is much more practical: weddings. Does it feel like everyone around you is getting married or engaged? That can mean plenty of weekends already eaten up by pre- and post-wedding affairs within your social circle. Invitations provide that tangible way to lock loved ones into your celebration date. Plus, it’s a fun way to give guests a preview to your theme and any instructions for the event, such as dressing as their favorite Pokémon (although we’re totally not suggesting that as a party theme…or are we???).

Give props to your 30th b-day

You only turn 30 once, so why not maximize the experience with the right decorations. Giant “3-0” numbers really drive home the point, lest anyone forget the age you’re turning. These can be anything from giant homemade cardboard cutouts to big rented pieces with Hollywood-style light bulbs. Or you could hire a designer to make them theme specific. Taylor Jones, owner of Prop My Party OKC, suggests travel-friendly inflatable numbers when hosting a destination party, like she did recently for her own 30th celebration in Palm Springs (in hot pink no less).

If you’re sticking close to home, props can act as standalone party decorations that fill up a space. Oversized “3-0” Mylar balloons are an absolute must for decorating and posing with. Balloon arches, honeycomb paper spheres, and custom floor signs all create the perfect place for guests to gather for photos. Add a clever saying like “Talk Thirty to Me” for Instagram-worthy photo ops. Customize everything to the color scheme for instant visual pop. Jones recently designed the decor for a Barbie party, which included a pop-up toy shop (complete with doll box to pose in) featuring self-serve walls of sprinkled waffle cones and pink glasses of Champagne and rosé.

Turning 30 calls for a transfixing theme

The most important part of planning a 30th birthday may be choosing a theme, as that will likely dictate many other party elements, from decor to food to entertainment. Jones advises going with a theme that reflects a personal passion. “The best way to plan a 30th is to ask yourself what you love. We all have saves on Pinterest that we one day want to happen. Well, go find those pins and do it! You’ll be happy you did.”

Picture of animated birthday ad

Here are five themes to consider.

1. “13 Going on 30”

Did you love the Jennifer Garner movie “13 Going on 30″ growing up? Here’s your chance to reverse roles and relive your younger years. “This is such a vibe right now. Bringing elements of the movie to life in a fun way, such as ‘I wanna be 30 and flirty and thriving,’ playful purples, yellow, and lime green, and Razzles, of course,” Jones explains. For bonus points, make it a pajama slumber party and deck out a living room with inflatable beds. In the morning, serve up a scrumptious grown-up brunch with a heat-and-serve eggs Benedict bar complete with sparkling wine and sweet treats.

2. ’90s and ’00s nostalgia

Were you a Nintendo kid or Yu-Gi-Oh! player? Whatever your pre-teen passion was, here’s your chance to replay it in grand style. Host a gaming night or your own book fair, or just dip Dunkaroos (yes, they still make them!) while binging on classic cartoons (SpongeBob!) from your favorite era. Dig up some Tamagotchis or Furbies, break out the Mike’s Hard Lemonade, and enjoy a blast from the past. Need party favors? Lip Smackers and Goosebumps, of course!

3. Dirty 30 for real

Whether it’s glamping in the backyard or just serving up a “dirt and worms” cake, embrace this fun play on words by getting back to nature for your 30th. You could even add in camp crafts from your younger years, such as making friendship bracelets or playing paper fortune teller games.

Want to keep the camp theme but skip the dirt altogether? Host s’more making inside with a kit that has everything you need to make your own ooey gooey dessert sandwiches.

4. A tasteful 30

Embrace the new all-grown-up you with something super sophisticated, such as a wine tasting, French-themed dinner party, or vintage-inspired soiree — whether that’s a proper Regency-style royal tea party or recreating a boozy Roaring ’20s speakeasy. Think lots of candlelightfresh flowers, and monochromatic colors for an elevated table setting. Don’t forget to ask guests to dress up in their glitziest evening attire.

30th Birthday Ideas: A Picnic with Friends

5. Recreate your favorite TV show

Whether it’s “Saved By the Bell” or “Succession,” trick out your celebration with the colors, sayings, and costumes that make each TV series unique. Play up on your “aging” with a “Golden Girls” sunny Florida get-together, or make it “The One Where You Turned 30″ with a “Friends” theme, complete with trivia about the show.

Permission to be extra with 30th birthday entertainment

A photographer might not be one of your first ideas when planning an epic 30th birthday party, but do not overlook this pro in your plans, Jones advises. “Finding the perfect photographer is huge,” she says. “There are different styles of photography, so finding someone that completes your vision is really important.” You’re sure to have wonderful memories to document, and you won’t have to worry about getting everything captured.

Beyond that, lean into your theme when it comes to keeping guests entertained, whether that means renting a bounce house or ball pit, or putting up a projector screen to watch favorite movies from your youth.

Renting a Champagne cart can also make for a fun, interactive way to serve up party fare. Jones, who supplies carts for many of her parties, says these can be customized with wallpaper or paint to match the party theme. She’s turned hers into everything from a bouquet bar to gelato cart to mobile smoothie display, so the possibilities go beyond just a fancy way to serve bubbly.

Don’t forget the favors

Any proper adult party has to have favors. Chicago baker Mindy Cruz of Mindy’s Cookies and Sweets says cookies can make an awesome — and yummy! — favor that guests will appreciate taking home. “Over the past few years, custom cookies have really grown in popularity as an option for dessert tables and party favors. As an added bonus, they do well outdoors, unlike cakes and cupcakes.” Design ideas for 30th birthday custom cookies can include the birth date circled on a calendar graphic, a cute saying like “Thirty & Flirty,” or the word “Thirty” spelled out in different styles.

Consider favors that guests will get real enjoyment out of post-event. Keep the “Dirty 30″ theme going after the celebration is over with take-home gifts of mini succulents, help them maintain the feel-good vibes at their next party with mini bottles of bubbly — wrapped in personalized labels to remind them of the fabulous time they had at your bash, of course — or give them a sweet sendoff with ice cream cone cake pops.

Paws Up: 7 Ways to Celebrate National Dog Day

2023 survey by the American Pet Products Association found that 65% of households in the United States include a dog, and 85% of those respondents consider their dogs a member of the family.

And it’s easy to see why, says Nancy R. Gee, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and director of the Center for Human-Animal Interaction at Virginia Commonwealth University.

“Dogs are amazingly adept at reading human social cues, such as body language and emotional states,” Gee says. “Dogs, unlike any other companion animal species, are extremely well suited to helping humans in so many ways, many of which we still don’t fully understand.”

national dog day dog at table

Gee, who co-authored the research study “Dogs Supporting Human Health and Well-Being: A Biopsychosocial Approach” and co-edited the book “The Role of Companion Animals in the Treatment of Mental Disorders,” says the stresses of the pandemic lockdown spotlighted our desire for canine companionship.

“Dogs and humans are both social creatures,” she explains. “When humans were forced into social isolation by the pandemic lockdown, we sought out much-needed social connection, and dogs were an obvious choice. We were lonely, and dogs came to our rescue!”

If you are (or plan to be) a dog parent, National Dog Day is the perfect time to honor the special four-legged companion in your life. Held annually on Aug. 26, National Dog Day was founded by animal advocate Colleen Paige in 2004 as a way to encourage dog adoptions.

Are you looking for a late summer pick-me-up for you and your pooch? Here are seven ways to celebrate National Dog Day.

national dog day party

1. Host a dog day ‘do’

Invite a few other dog parents or dog-friendly folks to an outdoor party in your backyard. Or spread the word for an Aug. 26 meet-up at your favorite dog park.

Gee points out that dogs can serve as a “social lubricant” during these divisive times. “We can just talk about the dog in front of us and our own pets and not focus on those other more emotionally charged topics,” she says.

What to serve the humans? Hot dogs, of course. And for dessert, pick up a basket of treats that features an assortment of cookies and three different kinds of dog treats. Pawsome!

2. Take a hike

Group activities are fun, but what if you’d prefer some one-on-one time with your pet? Skip the crowded dog park and take a long walk together in a park or other natural setting.

“Biologically speaking, interacting with a dog has been found to reduce blood pressure and other indicators of stress, such as cortisol,” Gee notes. “Psychologically speaking, interacting with a dog has been found to reduce depression, anxiety, and elevate mood.”

When you combine those perks with fresh air and exercise, you’re doing a lot of good things for your health. However, staying hydrated is essential for both of you. That’s why you need a handy personalized dog water bottle to take with you on your adventure.

3. Cozy up on the couch

Since National Dog Day falls during the — ahem — dog days of summer, staying inside in an AC-controlled environment could be a better choice.

You can create your own National Dog Day movie marathon with classic films such as “My Dog Skip,” “Air Bud,” “Homeward Bound,” “Turner and Hooch,” “The Adventures of Milo and Otis,” “Benji,” and “Lassie.”

Make things extra cozy by cuddling up with your fur baby and a personalized fleece blanket. It can include your dog’s name and its phonetic pronunciation, as well as your choice of three humorous “definitions” that range from “Shoe chewer” to “Best friend.”

4. Get tricky

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Dogs are eager to learn, and they love to please their humans. All you need is some time, patience, and tasty treats.

While you work on the first two requirements, these organic dog treats have got you covered for the third. Your dog will flip (or sit…or shake…or roll over) for these all-natural, oven-baked snacks that, at least as far as Fido can tell, taste like peanut butter cookies. And you’ll rest easy knowing they contain no wheat, corn, or soy.

5. Take a dog nap

Cat naps are great, but let’s face it, dogs have got the napping thing down, too. Plus, they are so adorable when they act like they’re running or bark while they’re dreaming.

Naps are also beneficial for humans. In fact, new research shows that brief daytime naps can boost our brain health.

A special napping pillow for your furry friend is a great way to celebrate National Dog Day. This personalized dog bone pillow can be embroidered with your pet’s name, and when things get a little too, umm, hairy, you can unzip the cover for washing.

6. Keep them safe

According to the Michelson Found Animals Foundation, one in three pets will get lost at some point in their lifetime, and without an ID, 90% will not return home. Microchipping and pet identification tags help your precious pet get back home safely.

You can make a new personalized collar part of this year’s National Dog Day celebration. This snappy plaid model can be imprinted with your dog’s name and your phone number, eliminating the need for a separate ID tag. The fabric collar comes in your choice of four colors.

national dog day gift basket

7. Adopt a dog

Whether you’re looking for a new adventure buddy for yourself or a furry companion for your four-legged friend while you’re at work, your local animal shelter may have the perfect canine.

Check out your shelter’s website for photos and descriptions of their current guests, and then pay an in-person visit to see who has that special spark.

Of course, you’re going to want to celebrate the new addition to your family, and this important day, so have a “gotcha day” gift basket waiting for the pooch when he arrives at his new home. It includes cute toys, rawhide-free chews, carob chip treats, and a darling bow tie and bandana — all in a reusable woven rope tin.

Timeless Expressions of Love: 65 Heartfelt Anniversary Wishes

Love is the cornerstone of a happy and fulfilling marriage. With each year of wedded bliss, couples celebrate the journey they began on their wedding day with their anniversary — a milestone that marks another year of commitment, affection, and unwavering support.

anniversary wishes with senior couple drinking prosecco in a swimming pool

In the hearts of many couples, anniversaries hold a deep importance. They serve as a reminder of the unique bond and endless love two people share — and, in the middle of your busy schedules, to give your relationship some much-needed tender loving care.

“It’s important to celebrate anniversaries for three reasons,” says Dr. Wyatt Fisher, psychologist and relationship coach. “First, it’s helpful to make your partner feel special and show you care. Second, it’s a great time to bring the relationship back into center focus. Third, it’s good for the relationship as both partners remember their special moments through the years, which strengthens their bond.”

Whether your wedding bells rang last year, 20 years ago, or even 50 years ago, every year of marriage is worth celebrating. One simple yet meaningful way to make an anniversary memorable is crafting an anniversary card message for your spouse. When writing from the heart, Dr. Fisher says, make sure to always express what your partner means to you. “Comment on the special memories from the past and your hopes for the future of the relationship,” he says.

That advice also applies when celebrating the wedding anniversaries of loved ones, such as those of parents or friends. It also works for other kinds of anniversaries, including birthdays, work anniversaries, and any personal milestones that deserve to be celebrated.

7 Easy Ways to Prepare for Christmas in the Summer

You might be thinking July is waaay too soon to be worrying about Christmas. And yet the holidays have a way of sneaking up on us, making us woefully unprepared, stressed out, and utterly tired of running around with a long to-do list and an even longer shopping list.

While it’s decidedly too early to be putting up your Christmas decorations and wrapping presents, there are a few things you can get checked off your list now to make this year’s holiday season preparations more enjoyable and manageable.

1. Take advantage of summer deals

With lots of retailers offering their Black Friday and Christmas in July sales, the summer has great deals on a variety of items, including electronics, clothing and appareljewelry, tools, and vacation packages. It’s also a good time for purchasing home décor, including holiday decorations, as many shops and online retailers are starting to plan for their Christmas season and want to downsize their stock of last year’s items.

One smart move is to time your holiday shopping spree with one of the tax-free weekends taking place in July and August in more than a dozen states. (Another? Sign up for the Celebrations Passport to get free shipping on all your orders from the 1-800-Flowers.com Family of Brands.)

2. Get a head start on holiday DIY projects

If you like to make your own holiday gifts or decorations, now is the perfect time to start working on them. Gather your materials, ideas, and plans, figure out what you can make ahead of time and what materials you need to complete the projects, and get started.

The thing about DIY projects is that they tend to take more time then you initially planned, and that’s especially true around the holidays, when you have so many other to-do items on your list. Getting at least some of them done early will not only give you a head start on the holiday season but will make the projects more enjoyable.

Some Christmas DIY ideas include:

3. Create a holiday shopping list & budget

Santa already has his Christmas list. Do you? Starting your holiday shopping list in advance will ensure you don’t forget someone — and that you budget accordingly.

Start with your family and close friends, neighbors, work friends, important clients, teachers, coaches, babysitters, hosts and hostesses, and anyone else you typically buy for.

Don’t forget your kids’ bus driver or car pool drivers, mailman and trash collectors, hairdresser, dog walker, doctor, nurse or caregiver, priest or pastor, church group, carolers, and anyone else you regularly see and want to honor or thank this holiday.

Once you have your list and budget, add a couple of extra gifts (or gift cards) just in case you forgot someone.

You can also use this free downloadable holiday shopping list and budget planner to help you along.

4. Plan your Christmas cards in the summer

While it might be too early to purchase your Christmas cards, this is the perfect time to start planning them, especially if you want your cards to feature a family photo.

Decide on a theme for your photo and get it taken now while the weather is nice and you can get great pictures outside. If you’d rather have a fall or winter backdrop in your photos, book your photography session now before the spots fill up. Figure out what your family will wear, the type of photo you want, and other important details.

You can also order your holiday stamps, make your holiday address labels, or customize an address stamp so you’re ready to send out your Christmas cards on time this year!

5. Test new recipes for your holiday menu

A week before Christmas is not the time to experiment with a new Christmas cookie recipe, or any other recipe for that matter.

Whether you’re hosting this year or just bringing a dish along, now is the perfect time to research and try out new holiday recipes. Doing this so far ahead of the holiday season will help you not only find the best recipes but give you enough time to perfect them.

Additionally, you can get a good idea of how much time each recipe will take to make, where you’ll need to go to get all the ingredients, and, most important, if your family actually likes it.

6. Make travel arrangements early

The holidays are one of the busiest times of the year for travel, so it makes sense to plan as far ahead as possible.

With so many people being on the move, reservations can dry up quickly, so the earlier you can book, the better. Doing so will allow you to not only get a better price but is a great way to budget the travel costs ahead of all the usual holiday expenses (gifts, decorations, etc.).

7. Start a new family Christmas tradition

The holidays can get a bit hectic, with so much to do, so many places to visit, and so many people to see. That’s why it’s so important to make time for family.

Finding the right Christmas traditions for your family to enjoy year after year is essential. Whether it’s baking cookies together for a cookie exchange, making your own Christmas decorations, sending letters to Santa, having a Christmas movie marathon, hosting an ugly sweater party, going out to see the lighting of the Christmas tree, or caroling in your neighborhood, there are many great ways to spend quality family time during the holidays.

If you’re having trouble coming up with ideas, take a look at our list of fun Christmas traditions for kids or ask your friends and loved ones to share their favorite holiday traditions with you. Then decide on what would be fun for your family, plan it out, and put it on your calendar.

9 Ways to Thank Your Parents on National Parents’ Day

parents' day with Family together in nature

Parents are there with us through it all, from the time we take our first steps to the day we move into our college dorm to the moment we said “I do.”

It goes without saying that our parents play a vital role in our development, and our lives as a whole. From the moment we are born, our parents serve as caretakers, protectors, teachers, providers, and role models. They are true jacks of all trades, and the list of reasons why we should honor them is endless.

So, show your folks the appreciation they deserve this National Parents’ Day with a kind and thoughtful gesture that says, simply, “Thank you.”

What is National Parents’ Day?

While Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are typically when children express gratitude to their moms and dads, respectively, National Parents’ Day is a lesser known but equally important holiday.

In 1994, President Bill Clinton declared the fourth Sunday of July to be Parents’ Day, a day for “recognizing, uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children.” (This day is not to be confused with the Global Day of Parents, which is observed every year on June 1, the United Nations having declared it so in 2012.) This year, National Parents’ Day is Sunday, July 23.

The timing of National Parents’ Day is symbolic: After celebrating each parent individually in May and June, we bring our parents together and show them how much we care about them at the same time in July.

How to celebrate Nationals Parents’ Day

We all know why we should celebrate our parents — it’s the how that takes a bit more consideration.

Here are nine meaningful and thoughtful ways to thank mom and dad for all they have done for you.

1. Say “thank you”

A hug and heartfelt thank you can make a world of difference to your parents.

2. Take them out to dinner

Repay them for all the times they took you out to eat when you were younger by treating them to dinner. Make sure it’s at one of their favorite restaurants, and don’t forget to book a table ahead of time!

3. Get them flowers

Brighten up their day by sending fresh flowers to your parents. If National Parents’ Day sneaks up on you, order the blooms with same-day delivery.

4. Give them something personal

Gift your parents something special with their names inscribed on it, such as a welcome sign or family blanket.

5. Spoil them with something sweet

Surprise them with some chocolates or chocolate covered strawberries (or both!) to thank them for being such sweet parents.

6. Send them a card

Along with your gift, include a greeting card (or ecard) with a meaningful message to show your parents how much they mean to you. If you’re not sure what to write in it, use our posts about message ideas for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day as inspiration.

7. Recreate a treasured family moment

Relive the “good old days” by visiting a place you used to go to or doing an activity you used to do as a family.

8. Start a new tradition entirely

Or do something completely new and exciting with your parents! Cooking a meal together, going on a nature walk, or volunteering at a charity that is meaningful to you all are just three possibilities.

9. Spend time with them

Spending time with your parents, or visiting someone that acted as a parent figure to you, is the perfect way to show your affection and appreciation. Consider going out for or making a homemade brunch. If brunch isn’t your (or their) thing, create family memories together by hosting a family game night or watching a movie together.

5 Tips for Throwing a Fun and Memorable Housewarming Party

Having company over? In our “Hosting How-tos” series, we’ll teach you how to entertain like a pro. You’ve just moved, and now you want to celebrate. Read through our housewarming party ideas that will send your guests home happy.

Hosting a housewarming party is a great way to welcome friends and family to your new home while getting to know your new neighbors. It’s also a fabulous excuse to get together and indulge in fun, mouthwatering party food.

Moving can be exhausting, so it’s OK to wait until you’re settled into your new home before hosting a crowd. Seri Kertzner, chief party officer at Little Miss Party Planner in New York City, recently planned her own housewarming party, and she advises DIY party planners to focus on two key components: keeping guests entertained and well fed.

Prep as much as you can in advance so you don’t miss out on the fun. Then, you can relax, get dressed, and enjoy greeting your guests rather than being stuck in the kitchen.

If you want to make your party planning a breeze, here are five helpful housewarming party ideas to ensure happiness for you and your guests.

1. Create excitement

Send out invitations — either the electronic or paper variety — around three weeks before the party date. Online party sites and social media are great ways to get the word out. Remember to send a reminder a few days before the party. Limit the guest list to old friends (if you didn’t move far) and a few new neighbors, making sure to consider how many people can comfortably fit in your home (or backyard).

2. Decorate the new pad

Remember that guests are coming to see you and your new home  and they should understand you just moved in  so keep the decorations simple. “Fresh flowers and candlelight are a great way to decorate,” Kertzner explains. She uses LED battery-operated tea lights and flowers in unexpected places, such as around a bar and in the bathroom.

Other decorating ideas for a housewarming party include:

  • Have flowers delivered for stress-free decorating. The bright and lively sunflower bouquet is available in 10 or 20 stems, and in a variety of vase styles. Order several and use them as take-home favors.
  • Add themed housewarming signs or a backdrop for photos. These can easily be found online or in party supply stores, and give guests the perfect spot to pose for selfies that can double as keepsakes.
  • Show off your distinct style. If you decorated your new home in a modern farmhouse look, embrace the vibe with decorative succulents, burlap bows, and slate signs.

3. Provide entertainment

“Music is entertainment priority number one,” Kertzner insists. “Don’t ever let your guests walk into a quiet house.”

To get socializing going, leave conversation cards around congregation spots, such as in the kitchen or by a sitting area, for easy ice breaking. These could all fit a particular theme, such as traveling, with questions like “What’s your favorite vacation you’ve ever taken?” and “How soon before you go away do you start packing?”

Other ideas for activities include:

  • Download a home tour quiz game or household item version of “The Price Is Right”to add a bit of friendly competition.
  • Play backyard games like cornhole, badminton, or ladder golf.
  • Set up a gaming station for group video games or unplug with crowd-friendly tabletop board games.

4. Feed your guests

“Prep as much as you can in advance so you don’t miss out on the fun,” Kertzner urges. She makes sure all her party food is ready at least an hour beforehand. “Then, you can relax, get dressed, and enjoy greeting your guests, rather than being stuck in the kitchen.”

Wondering what to serve? Here are some scrumptious options.

Self-served small plates

“I don’t think I’ll ever serve big bowls of chips and dip again!” Kertzner says. “Lately, I’ve been making individual charcuterie boxes. They’re really easy using basic craft boxes.” Assemble these the morning of the party, loading each one with meat, cheesefruit, and crackers. The Harry & David Ultimate Charcuterie and Cheese Collection comes with all the fixings you’ll need to create these servings. Add the Deluxe Antipasto Ultimate Wine Pairing Collection for an instant wine tasting event.

Shared individual dishes

Kertzner suggests serving finger foods that guests can grab with toothpicks, such as croquettes or empanadas. She also likes putting out popcorn for her guests, both sweet and savory. And don’t forget to label each flavor!

Which brings us to Kertzner’s next tip. “Use small place cards to let guests know what each food item is. It adds a sophisticated touch and helps guests navigate their choices better.”

Beautiful buffets

Kertzner likes to pare down meals to three main components: a starch, a protein, and a brightly colored vegetable. Pick up some top sirloin and veggies, such as peppers, onions, and eggplant, to make kebabs. Skip the fruit bowl and instead create a rainbow of fruit kebabs using watermelon, blueberries, and melon (or buy them ready made!).

A simple drink menu

Limit your bar menu to just beer, wine, and a signature drink — and don’t forget non-alcoholic drinks. Kertzner advises to have plenty of water in pitchers around the house, along with soda and juice. Ice is essential, so Kertzner suggests using an online ice calculator to ensure you don’t run out.

housewarming party ideas with a cookie display

You can create an effortlessly elegant dessert table with cookies. Kertzner suggests using multi-tier cake stands to add height and a professional look. Cover the displays with glass domes, and decorate them with greens and fresh flowers.

  • Choose a wide assortment of cookie flavors. If your party is during the warmer months, highlight the flavors of the season with a summer flavors box.
  • Add ice-filled containers with carafes of ice-cold milk and chilled coffee.
  • Keep little ones entertained with cookie decorating kits.

5. Send everyone home happy

Before guests leave, ask everyone to sign a commemorative piece, such as a wood tray, that can become a housewarming memento. Another idea is to leave blank recipe cards for guests to fill out with their favorite recipes to help you start a collection.

Party favors are a great way to show your guests gratitude. Individual candles will thank everyone for helping to “warm” your home. You could also thank your guests for popping by with popcorn balls or cookie cards.

9 Places to Bring Rosé This Summer

Once temperatures start climbing into the 80s, you know it’s time for two things: backyard barbecues and rosé wine. Sure, its pink coloring may have helped it get on millennials’ good side at first, but rosé is beloved by people from all generations. Whether it’s paired with a beautiful charcuterie board or sweet chocolate-covered berries (heck, even cookies!), rosé is easy to sip during any occasion.

With warm weather finally here, we’ve rounded up the best places to bring rosé all summer long.

1. Barbecues

Man cooking meat and vegetables on barbecue grill outdoors

Don’t let its looks fool you — rosé pairs well with even the most heavily seasoned, hearty cuts of meat. Whether you’re serving steak, chicken, or burgers and dogs, make sure you’ve got a few bottles of rosé in the cooler to pair with the meal at your backyard party.

2. Parks

Forget the beer, even if it is one of those microbrews made with 1,000-year-old yeast and ghost peppers — this summer it’s all about rosé! Whether you’re heading to the park to throw a Frisbee around with friends (frolf, anyone?) or enjoy a good book under a shady tree, make sure you always have something cold and refreshing within reach. Remember to also bring the sunscreen.

3. BYOB restaurants

A fantastic way to enjoy your favorite bottle of wine, while saving money eating out, is to bring your own. Grab your fave rosé from home and tote it to the restaurant with you or ask the shopkeeper to recommend one based on where you’re dining. Or just order this bottle. It only won the silver medal at the 2022 Oregon Wine Awards.

4. Picnics

Picnics have evolved from your classic checkerboard blankets and cold sandwiches. Nowadays, planning a picnic is an art form, but it doesn’t have to be an overly complex one. Elevate lunch with your schmoopy by packing a lightweight rosé, fruits and cheeses, and chocolates for dessert in a traditional wicker basket.

5. Graduation parties

After four years of group projects, papers, and tests, it’s finally time to call yourself (or the person you love) a college graduate. Whether you’re hosting or attending a graduation party this summer, don’t forget to add rosé to the beverage list. Also on your list of necessities? Flowers for the happy grad and plenty of ice cream to keep guests cool.

6. Brunch

Ending the weekend with brunch is the best way to take advantage of every minute of the warm weather. With summer fruits soon reaching their peak ripeness, there’s no better drink to pair with citrusy fruit and summer sun than rosé.

7. On the boat

If you own a boat, or are lucky enough to be friends with someone who does, let us be the first to say that you’re going to have an amazing summer. Now the only thing left to do (in addition to inviting us) is stock your floating fridge to the brim with rosé and a few of your favorite snacks to pair with it.

8. Summer night in

Don’t get us wrong, we love summer nights out. But sometimes a jam-packed restaurant without (or with too much) air conditioning doesn’t make for the most relaxing experience. Kick back with your best friends in the cool comfort of your home, on your terrace, or even by setting up a few chairs in your driveway. If you don’t have the privilege of AC, position a few fans around the house to add a cool breeze throughout the evening. Best of all, refills in your living room are always free!

9. All the parties

Come to think of it, there are very few places to bring rosé that won’t go over well. From bachelorette parties to baby showers and engagement parties, rosé is a perennial crowd pleaser.
